What You Need to Share the Bible with Kids: Point One – Passion, Part Three

Post 4 Peas Passion Part 3 PicLearn how to share the Bible with kids effectively by implementing The Scripture Lady’s four “peas” of importance.

Isn’t it amazing the process of growth that God has established through one tiny seed planted deep in the dark soil? We wait for a few days or more before we see some sign of life pop up above the surface and we get excited to see the full fruit of the gardener’s labor. Before we know it the roses are in full bloom or the zucchini is ripe for the picking. The whole process speaks of the mystery of growth.

Did you know that your passion can grow? Passion is a lot like a seed that God has planted deep within your life. He has given you the desires of your heart and is waiting for you to nurture and carefully tend the gifts and passions He has placed in your heart. Yet many of us prove to be poor gardeners. Sadly, I think many Christians go home to be with the Lord without living out their God-given passion on earth.

I believe God has given each of us more than one passion to pursue. But as Christians parents and teachers who share the Bible with our children we should definitely be passionate about growing in God’s Word. If you do not exhibit a growing love for God’s Word, how can you expect your children to do so?

Answer this question: On a scale of 1 to 10, one being the least and 10 the greatest, where is your passion for the Word of God?

Now that you’ve honestly answered the question, let me encourage you. No matter where you are on the passion scale there is always room for improvement and God would love to help you grow! It doesn’t matter if you just became a Christian and opened your Bible for the first time or if you are a biblical professor at your local seminary, there is always room for more passion.

So how do you grow in your passion?

I believe your passion will grow through prayer, a plan and people who will inspire you.

For the most part, if you want something you go get it or ask for it. God wants you to ask Him for things you want and need.

Matthew 7:9 – 11 says this:

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

This is a great verse and should greatly encourage you to ask your heavenly Father for anything you need. Do you honestly think that if you prayed, “Father, please increase my passion for your Word and sharing it with my children,” that He would deny you this request? Absolutely not! God Greatly desires each of His children to grow in their love for His Word because He knows it is through His Word that we learn we are set free from sin and death. The Bible teaches us of God’s love and its life changing truths. God knows that “man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” (Deuteronomy 8:3)

So, if you need your passion to increase for God’s Word, then pray to the One who can abundantly answer your prayer.

The second way to grow in your passion for theWord of God is to implement a plan for reading it. If you don’t open up your Bible, it won’t get read. How much time do you spend reading the Bible? If you answer, “not at all, ” then start with a 5-minute per day reading program. If you have access to the internet, there are literally hundreds of great sites to help you implement a Bible-reading regimen. Taking this “baby step” is a lot like planting a seed that we spoke about at the beginning. Water and nurture the seed and you will see your passion for spending time in God’s Word grow.

Finally, a third way you can grow in your passion for the Bible is to surround yourself with people who are already passionate about God’s Word. I am a voracious reader and I can’t tell you how many life-changing biographies I have read about people who love God and His Word. These books have deeply impacted my walk with the Lord. I also have Christian friends in my life who challenge me as well as a longtime children’s ministry mentor, Barney Kinard, from Kidhelper.com If you long to emulate someone, you need to spend time with that person or spend time learning about who they are. Your passion will definitely grow as you are inspired by those who have gone before you and who can walk alongside you on this journey into a passion filled life.

“Pea” number one has been all about passion – an important part when learning how to share the Bible with kids. “Pea” number two will be about prayerfulness in my next article.
