Trusting God for Joy – Yesterday Was Better | The Scripture Lady

by | Nov 27, 2010 | Bible Object Lessons, The Blog

An open calendar showing January 1 with the phrase 'Yesterday Was Better'.

This Bible object lesson will help kids trust God for joy today instead of longing for the past, and for this one you will need the following:

  • 📅 A calendar

🙋 Ask the following questions to spark discussion:

  1. What am I holding? (Hold up the calendar.)
  2. Who can tell me what they were doing last summer, or last September?
  3. Is there a month you wish you could go back to? Why?
  4. Do you remember the story of Job,

and how he lost everything? If anyone had a reason to want the past back, it was Job.

  1. Has your friendship with Jesus ever felt less close than it used to?

Ask a child to read Job 29:2, then walk through these three points together:

1️⃣ It’s normal to miss how things used to be. Maybe your friendship with Jesus used to feel close and exciting, and now it feels ho-hum. That happens to grown-ups too.

2️⃣ There’s usually a reason for it. Ask kids to consider: Have you stopped praying as much? Has something else crept into first place in your heart? Have you started feeling like you don’t really need God?

3️⃣ Job didn’t stay stuck in the past — and neither do you have to. By the end of his story, Job learned to trust God for joy today. Take whatever’s crowding out your closeness to Jesus, and give it to Him. He’ll help you feel close again.

Suggestions for Success:

  1. Bring a real event from your own walk with God — kids relate better when you go first.
  2. Keep the calendar prop handy; it works for any “then vs. now” lesson.
  3. Follow up during the week and ask if anyone tried talking to God about what’s been distracting them.

This 3-point format was inspired by C.H. Spurgeon’s devotional on Job 29:2 in Morning and Evening.

This is one of my favorite reminders — that no matter how close we felt to Jesus yesterday, He’s ready to meet us fresh today. Job’s story always gives me chills for how honestly he wrestled with God. I hope this one blesses your kids like it’s blessed me!

Thank you! I will be using this for children’s church in the morning .
