Scripture Lady’s Bible Verse Games: Popping for Joy – Learning Nehemiah 8:10

by | Dec 13, 2010 | Bible Memory Verse Games, The Blog

Popping for Joy “” a simple bible memory verse game for teachers and parents.

Use this fun activity to help children learn Nehemiah 8:10: “…for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”

I once felt like I had lost my joy””miserable and withdrawn””but as I rested more in the Lord, my joy and strength returned. Nehemiah 8:10 says, “…for the joy of the LORD is your/(my) strength.” This memory verse is perfect for children and adults alike. Use this simple bible verse game to help kids hide God’s Word in their hearts: it’s called “Popping for Joy.”

Quick prep note: allow about 20—30 minutes to make materials; best for preschool—elementary-aged children. Tip: choose and state a Bible translation (NIV, ESV, KJV, etc.) before making your index cards””word counts can vary by translation, so adapt by splitting small words if needed.

What you’ll need: make an index card for each word in the chosen verse (this example uses 11 cards); place the cards in verse order on a pocket chart, whiteboard, or table so all kids can easily see them. Prepare 11 balloons (or use envelopes/paper cups as a non-balloon alternative). Inside each balloon place a small paper slip with a point value and a short list of words as shown below.

Worthwhile purchase for ANY classroom or home!
Classroom Pocket Chart

The classroom words pocket chart is perfect for teaching lessons, fitting sentence strips and displaying word cards. A good helper for teachers to launch activities with students, such as showing vocabulary words, index cards and flashcards to teach students or to play games.

Blow the balloons up and place them in a trash bag or large box where kids can reach them safely. If you prefer a non-balloon option, place the same point slips in numbered envelopes or paper cups. For safety with younger children, pre-pop the balloons and use the paper slips in cups or envelopes “” the point system and words work the same.

How to play:

Divide the children into two teams (or small groups). On each turn, have a child from the next team choose a balloon (or numbered envelope/cup). The child should pop the balloon (or open the envelope) to reveal a paper slip showing the point value and a short list of words. Turn over the matching words on your display of Nehemiah 8:10 so everyone can see which words are missing.

The child must say the verse aloud, filling in the missing words. If they include the correct words, their team earns the points shown; if not, the other team gets the points. Then play passes to the next team. Keep a running total on a whiteboard or pocket chart so everyone can follow the score.

Safety and accessibility options: For popping alternatives, let the teacher pop with scissors or a paper clip, or have the child tap the balloon with a pencil while an adult holds it. For younger children or groups with choking concerns, skip balloons entirely and use envelopes or cups with pre-folded paper slips.

Variations and timing: set a target score (for example, first team to 200 points) or limit the game to a set number of turns (10—12) if you’re short on time. For quieter or more reflective memory practice, older children can write the missing words on a whiteboard or card instead of reciting aloud.

Troubleshooting: if a slip is illegible or a balloon mis-pops, discard it and let the child draw again. For ties, have a sudden-death round using a single slip with one missing word. To keep the game friendly for all ages, remove the highest-value slips or reduce point spreads for younger groups.

Introduce the activity with a quick, energetic opener to get attention: “Everybody show your best muscle pose!” (For children who can’t stand, invite raised hands or a big smile.) Follow with a brief, simple explanation: there are many things that make us feel strong, but Nehemiah 8:10 teaches that “the joy of the Lord is our strength.”

Say the verse together a few times before you start the game so it’s fresh in their minds. Suggested warm-up options: call-and-response (leader says a phrase, kids echo), whisper-and-shout (whisper once, say it together loudly), or have kids point to the words on a whiteboard or pocket chart as you say verse together. Aim for 3—5 quick repetitions.

Short teacher script (1—2 minutes): “We’re going to play ‘Popping for Joy’ to help us memorize Nehemiah 8:10. Listen carefully and fill in the missing words when it’s your turn. Be kind, help your teammates, and have fun!”

Teacher tips and checklist: have index cards, point slips, balloons (or envelopes), a pocket chart or whiteboard, a marker for scores, and a small trash bag or box for popped balloon pieces. Prep time: about 20—30 minutes. Ages: preschool—elementary. Safety reminder: supervise balloons closely and consider envelopes or cups for younger children.

Here is a short “Teach Me the Moves” video you can use to review Nehemiah 8:10 with your class: the song “Joy, Joy, Joy” pairs simple motions with the verse so kids practice scripture memory in a fun way. Use the video at the end of the lesson””play it twice, have children follow the moves, then say the verse together from memory.
