The Scripture Lady loves creating Holiday Bible games! Here is one for Christmas called “If I Were…Joseph, Mary, or…” to teach kids about the Christmas story.
What would it have been like to be Joseph or Mary? Or how about one of the shepherds when the Heavenly Hosts appeared and sang “Glory to God in the Highest!”? I think it would have been marvelous! The Christmas story is so beautiful and it’s important that our children know it very well, so why not play this game to test them on their knowledge of the most magnificent event in history? It’s called, “If I Were…” and can be easily played with 2 or more children.
Holiday Bible games will help your children hide God’s Word in their hearts and for this one you will need to do the following:
You will need to prepare 8 number cards, numbered 1 through 8. You will also need to prepare pictures for the following characters of the Christmas story:
1. An Angel (worth 40 points)
2. Heavenly Host (worth 50 points)
3. A Shepherd (worth 10 points)
4. Joseph (worth 20 points)
5. 2 Mary Cards (worth 30 points each)
6. 2 Jesus Cards (worth 60 points each)
When creating the picture cards, include the point value on the card as well. Back each of the picture cards with one of the number cards. It does not matter which number is on a picture. Laminate your cards for long-term use.
Finally, you will need a copy of the multiple choice questions, found below, that you will ask the children when they pick the appropriate card.
Here’s how to play:
Simply display all 8 cards with the number side showing on a pocket chart or on a table, however you like. Next call up a child from one of the teams and have them pick a number. Let them turn over the card to reveal a character from the Christmas story. If, for example, they picked Mary, you would then ask them one of the multiple choice questions that apply to Mary. If they answer correctly, their team earns the number of points written on that particular card. It is then the next team’s turn. Go through all 8 cards and the team with the highest score wins.
If you’d like the game to last a little longer, you could put slips of paper with the numbers 1 through 8 on each and put them in a hat. When it’s a child’s turn, they have to pick a number out of the hat and turn that card over. Place the slip of paper back in the hat. If on a turn that number is picked again, that team cannot turn a card over that’s already been used, thus the game could last quite a bit longer and add to the suspense of who will walk away with the most points.
