The Scripture Lady loves creating Bible verse games for kids! Here is one called “Wrong Way, Right Way” to help learn James 5:20.
Have you ever seen someone go down the wrong path or street? I bet you wanted to yell, “Stop!” The truth is, there are millions of people going the wrong way everyday. Instead, they should be heading toward Jesus who is the only way to the right way. Do your kids know that they can take part in helping lead their friends away from the wrong way? James 5:20 says this: “Anyone who brings a sinner back from the wrong way will save that sinner’s soul from death.” This is a pretty strong verse with a strong message. But elementary kids are ready to understand that death is real and there is a wrong and right way. Why not try playing this fun Bible verse game to help your kids understand this important truth and memorize this important Scripture? I call it, “Wrong Way, Right Way.”
Bible verse games will help your kids hide God’s Word in their hearts and for this one you will need to do the following:
Before playing you will need to put together the following: Grab 2 ropes about 6 feet long each on which clothespins will easily fit. On one end of each rope, hang a sign that reads: Wrong Way. On each of the other ends, hang a sign that reads: Right Way. Next, take 2 paper plates and draw a face on each. You might want one to be a boy and the other a girl. Tie a loop of string at the top of each plate so that you can easily attach it to the rope with a clothespin. Now place 6 pieces of colorful tape equidistantly apart on each rope. These are the spaces on which the “person” will be moved. Finally, prepare 2 objects that are exactly the same, yet are different colors, such as 2 beanbags and place them inside a bag so that the children cannot see them. One object will represent the wrong way and the other will represent the right way. You are now ready to play the game.
Divide your kids into 2 teams. Say the following: Today we are going to memorize a very important Bible verse. It is James 5:20 and it says this: “Anyone who brings a sinner back from the wrong way will save that sinner’s soul from death.” I bet a lot of you know people who seem to always be doing the wrong thing or going the wrong way. But this Scripture says that you can take part in leading your friends away from the wrong way, which leads to death, and point them towards the right way, which leads to Jesus. Let’s play “Wrong Way, Right Way” to help us learn James 5:20 and see who can get their person (hold up paper plate face) to Jesus first. Before playing our game, let’s say James 5:20 several times together. Remember, the faster you memorize the verse, the better your team will do.
Pick 2 kids from each team who would like to hold the ends of the ropes. If you have a smaller class, you could tie each of the ropes to chairs. Explain that with every successful attempt of reciting the Bible verse, each team will get to reach into this bag that contains 2 beanbags. (Show them the bag and beanbags.) The (red) beanbag will stand for the wrong way. The (green) beanbag will stand for the right way. If you pick the red beanbag, your “person” (point to the paper plate) will have to move backwards a space. If you pick the green bag, your “person” gets to move forward a space. Now have a child from the first team come up and try and recite James 5:20. If he is successful, allow him to reach into your bag that has the beanbags. Play until one team has their “person” successfully reach the “Right Way”.
Tip: Begin the “person” on the “Wrong Way” sign. If a team picks the red beanbag and their “person” cannot move back any further, the paper plate just stays in the same position.
