When Moses met God on Mt. Sinai, he was told to take off his shoes because he was standing on holy ground. I think the same is true wherever we pray — it’s holy ground, too. The Lord’s Prayer is a beautiful model for how we should talk with our Father, and it’s one every child should know. Here’s a fun (and admittedly a little stinky) Bible verse game to help kids learn it: “Pass the Prayer Shoes.”
This Bible verse game will help your kids hide God’s Word in their hearts, and for this one you will need the following:
- A number for each child (1 through however many kids you have).

- Masking tape and a permanent marker, to label each child’s shoe soles — one shoe gets their number + “A,” the other gets their number + “B” (e.g., Joshua’s shoes would read 4A and 4B)
- A hat or bucket with index cards, one for each number you handed out
- A way to keep score
- A musical version of the Lord’s Prayer you can play and pause

Introduce the lesson this way:
Ask your class: “Raise your hand if you ever pray to God.” (Wait for responses.) “I’m glad to see some of you take time to pray — God loves it when you talk to Him! Now raise your hand if you’ve ever prayed or heard the Lord’s Prayer.” Play the song above, and either unpack its meaning briefly or head straight into the game. Explain that the game is based on Moses taking off his shoes before God on Mt. Sinai as a sign of respect — and today, everyone’s shoes are about to get labeled and mixed up!
How to play:
Have kids pile all their labeled shoes together and form a circle around the pile. Each child grabs one shoe from the pile — just not their own. Play the Lord’s Prayer song while kids pass their shoe to the right. Stop the music without warning, then draw a number from the bucket. Whoever is holding that number’s “A” and “B” shoes gets a shot at points: read a prayer from the list below along with its two name options. The child holding the “A” shoe answers first for 50 points; if they miss, it passes to the “B” shoe holder. (If a child ends up holding a matching pair for the number drawn, draw a different number instead.) The player with the most points when time is up wins.
Tip: Place each card back in the bucket after it’s used — it’s fine for a prayer to come up more than once.

- Genesis 15:2–3 — Zechariah or Abram (Abraham)
- 1 Samuel 1:10–11 — Hannah or Elizabeth
- Genesis 18:32 — Abraham or Lot
- Matthew 8:24–25 — The Pharisees or the disciples
- Exodus 14:21 — Moses or Joshua
- Joshua 10:12 — Caleb or Joshua
- 2 Samuel 24:10 — Samson or David
- 1 Kings 3:5–9 — Samuel or Solomon
- 1 Chronicles 4:10 — Jabez or Nehemiah
- Acts 7:59–60 — Stephen or Paul
Suggestions for Success:
- Label all the shoes before kids arrive if you can — it speeds up game setup considerably.
- For older elementary kids, read the full Bible verse aloud (not just the paraphrase) for an added challenge.
