The Scripture Lady loves creating Bible review games! Here is one called “My Mom Makes…” to teach about moms in the Bible.
Moms are amazing!
One of the greatest talents my mom has is cooking a fantastic meal. I am sure her lasagna would win first place in the national Italy fair if given the chance. Your kids probably have some favorite foods that their moms or grandmas make as well. Mother’s Day is a great day to celebrate our mothers and the caregiving women in our lives. Here is a fun Bible activity for kids designed to help your elementary kids think about their own mothers as well as some special mothers in the Bible.
Bible review games will help your children learn God’s Word in a fun way and for this one you will need to do the following:
You will need to prepare 20 cards that showcase 20 different foods. I have provided you with the list of foods I used down below. On the top of each card, wrote “My mom makes…” I then placed the picture of the food below the title along with the word of the food item. Next, you will prepare 20 Point cards: 5 worth 100 points, 5 worth 200 points, 5 worth 300 points and 5 worth 400 points. Next, you will prepare 12 Multiple Choice Quiz cards. I have provided these quizzes down below. Finally, you may want to make a title card to give your game a nice finished look. Back all of the food cards with a point value card. Laminate all the cards so that they will last for a long time. Click here for a picture showing my set up of the game.
Set Up: For this game, I use 2 pocket charts (approx. 28″ square). (You can find pocket charts at your local teacher supply store or online at www.orientaltrading.com) Place all of the food cards in random order, point side hidden, on one chart. On the second chart, place the title cards at the top.
How to Play: Divide your children into 2 teams and pick a child to be the scorekeeper. Tell the children that they are going to celebrate Mother’s Day by remembering all of the yummy foods their moms or grandmas or aunts prepare for them day in and day out. Explain that the food cards displayed on the first chart all have points on the back of them ranging from 100 to 400 points. Say the following to your class: “My mom makes really good tacos. (Pick up the taco card.) The taco card is worth _(200)_points. I am going to place the taco card over on this second chart with the point side showing. You now have to remember what food was behind this card. As the game is played, you will have to remember each food item that is placed on this second chart in the order that they were picked. For every food card you successfully remember, you will earn that total number of points for your team. Our Bible review questions will be about some wonderful moms in the Bible. Are you ready? (Wait for response.) Then here we go!”
Have a child come up from the first team. The teacher should ask the first Bible review question. If the child answers correctly, ask him to pick one of the Food Cards. (Let’s say he picks the muffin worth 400 points.) Reveal the point value on the back. Place the food card, point side out, next to the “taco” card that is also turned point side out. The child must now say, “My mom makes tacos (turn the taco card over to reveal that he got it right) and muffins (turn the muffin card over to reveal that he got it right). If he named both of the food items correctly, he earns 600 points for his team for that round. Before the next child comes up to play, turn the taco and muffin back around to their point sides. As you can see, this will get more and more difficult as the game goes on.
Hints: You can allow the audience to help their teammate if you would like or your could have the child be allowed to ask for one time of help by picking out a specific friend at a point where he feels stumped. (Kind of like on “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”.)
