Do you remember what it felt like to hunt for “treasure” in your backyard? Sure, maybe all you found was some rusted screws or keys or muddy coins, but it was still worth the time and effort. Perhaps those keys or coins belonged to a pirate from the 1600’s! Imaginations can soar with the possibilities.
Now, how about teaching your kids about the greatest treasure of all – the Word of God! “Hunting for Treasure” is a great Bible memory verse game to introduce your class to a Bible verse they will be learning about or eventually memorize.
Here’s what you do:
First decide which Bible verse you want to introduce. Next, gather enough different items you might consider “treasure” worthy, one item for each word in the verse. These items could be in the form of pictures (don’t forget to laminate) or real objects. Some examples of “treasure” items might be jewelry, keys, china, silverware, pearls (fake, of course), books, or candles. Just think along the lines of pirate booty. Now write or attach each one of the words found in the verse to each “treasure” item. Finally, hide all the items around the room.
As children enter the class, whisper into each of their ears the name of one of the items and encourage them to go hunt for their treasure. If your Bible verse contains more words than you have kids, give more than one item to some of the children to find. If your Bible verse contains fewer words than you have kids, have the children double up to look for their treasure.
Once the children have found all the items, have them work together as a group and line all the objects or pictures in a row to correctly present the Bible verse. Tell the class that they went hunting for treasure and found the greatest treasure of all – God’s Word. In conclusion, have one of the children read the Bible verse out loud and then proceed with the lesson you have prepared that goes with the Scripture.
