Scripture Lady’s Bible Review Games: Hidden Treasures

The Scripture Lady loves creating Bible review games! Here is one called “Hidden Treasures.”

Do you remember the game called “Battleship”?  I loved that game!  I liked figuring out where “A-5” was on my board and seeing whether or not I made a “hit”.  Well, here is a fun Bible activity for kids you can play that will get them excited about finding God’s hidden treasures instead of battleships.  This game uses cards that remind the children of 3 different objects that the Word of God is compared to: a flame, a lamp and a sword.

Bible review games will help your children learn God’s Word in a fun way and for this one you will need to do the following:

1.  For this game you will need to prepare a total of 35 cards that are 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches.

Here is a list of the cards and their images you will need to prepare:

5 cards: Numbers 1 through 5, one number on each

5 cards: A, B, C, D, E

16 cards with X’s on them

2 cards with pictures of a flame

3 cards with pictures of a lamp

4 cards with pictures of a sword

Optional: Create a backing for all of the cards with X’s, flames, lamps and swords. Doing this will give your game a more professional feel and the kids will appreciate the love and care you took to make it. You might also want to create “Title” cards you can place at the top of your board or pocket chart.

Last, create a chart big enough for all your class to see that says the following:

Find 2 Flame Cards for 30 points each.

Find 3 Lamp Cards for 40 points each.

Find 4 Sword Cards for 50 points each.

You will definitely want to laminate all these cards for long-term use.

2.  I also suggest you use a pocket chart to play this game, but a large table or floor area will do.  If you don’t know by now, I love pocket charts.  You can get them at your local  teacher supply store or online at www.orientaltrading.com.

3.  Set up your pocket chart or playing area by placing the 5 letter cards along the top of the chart and the 5 number cards going down along the left side.  Line up the rest of the cards, image side hidden, in columns and rows as in the image I provided above.  Strategically place the flames, lamps and swords in different areas of the board.  Connect the 2 flame cards together, the 3 lamp cards together and the 4 sword cards together going horizontally or vertically.  The “X” cards go everywhere the others are not.

Here’s how to play:

Divide the class into 2 teams.  Tell the children that they will be hunting for hidden treasure.  The Word of God may be the greatest treasure a Christian possesses.  The Bible says that the Word of God is like a devouring flame, a lamp to our feet and a light unto our path and it’s the sword of the Spirit!  Show the class the “Hidden Treasure Chart” and tell them that somewhere on the board are 2 flame cards connected together, 3 lamp cards connected together and 4 sword cards connected together.  They might be placed horizontally or vertically.  Each card is worth a certain amount of points.  So, once a flame, lamp or sword card is found the kids should try and pick a coordinate that is next to the last card chosen in hopes of finding all of the matching cards.

Give a child from each team the chance to say the memory verse you have been working on.  If he says it correctly, he gets to pick a coordinate on the board such as B – 4.  The teacher will turn the chosen card over.  If it is an “X” card, that team does not receive any points.  If it is a flame card, the child earns 30 points for their team.  A lamp card earns 40 points for the team and a sword card earns 50 points for the team.  A new child from the next team is up and tries to pick a good coordinate after saying the memory verse.  Have the game go for as long as you like.  The team with the most points, wins. Happy hunting!
