The Scripture Lady loves creating Bible verse games for kids! Here is one called “Heart’s Delight” to help learn Psalm Jeremiah 15:16.
Would you like ketchup or mustard with your love? Or how about some soy sauce to put on top of your forgiveness? No. I’m not crazy, but I am trying to have a little literal fun with Jeremiah 15:16, which says, “When Your words came I ate them. They were my joy and heart’s delight for I bear Your name Lord God Almighty.”
What a great verse! All of us have had amazing food that has left us completely satisfied. God’s Word can be even more delicious and fulfilling than the yummiest meal ever. Here is a fun Bible verse game to help inspire your kids to memorize this super tasty verse.
Bible verse games will help your kids hide God’s Word in their hearts and for this one you will need to do the following:
Create 8 sets of 5 food cards. Each set of food cards will be an identical picture of the same food. For example, you might have five cards of the same picture of spaghetti, 5 of hamburgers and so on. You can find great images of food on the Internet. Just Google: images and then type in food.
You will also need to create 8 cards that show a picture of a bomb on it. Or you could have the cards say the word “Kapowee!” Make your cards 3”x 3” or so they will fit nicely in a pocket chart. (Pocket charts are great classroom tools. You can check them out at orientaltrading.com.) This game will be played between 2 teams, so place 4 of the different foods on one side of the pocket chart in a column and the other 4 in a column on the other side. The object of this game is to see which team can make the most matches after everyone has had an opportunity to recite Jeremiah 15:16. Place the remaining 40 cards in a bucket so that they can’t be seen. You are now ready to play.
Divide your class into 2 teams. Introduce Jeremiah 15:16 in much the same way I began this article. Have the children recite the verse several times. Now introduce the game “Heart’s Delight.” Show the students the bag of cards and the cards on the pocket chart. Instruct them that each team will try to make as many matches as possible. They can pick up to 3 cards out of the bag on their turn. But tell them to be careful, because if they pick a “bomb’ card, they will lose all their matches for that turn. After a “bomb” card is picked, you should discard it. Now pick a child from team one to go first. He must say the verse correctly. If he is successful, allow him to pick up to 3 cards out of the bucket. Place any matching cards he picks onto their team’s side of the chart. If the child was not successful in saying the verse correctly, he loses a turn for his team and the next team goes. The team with most matches wins.
