Scripture Lady’s Bible Verse Games: Hangin’ Out the Wash – Learning Ephesians 5:25-27

The Scripture Lady loves creating Bible verse games for kids! Here is one called “Hangin’ Out the Wash” to help learn Ephesians 5:25-27.

Why does a shower or bath feel so good?  Because we’re getting clean, of course.  God is very concerned with our cleanliness.  Just read Ephesians 5:25-27 and you’ll see why.  It says “…Jesus Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the Word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain…but holy and blameless.”  It’s important that our kids learn that God wants us to be holy, separated for Him alone to bring Him glory.  He does this through His Word.  It’s almost like reading God’s Word is like taking a holy bath. Here is a fun Bible verse game that will help your kids memorize this great verse.  I call it “Hangin’ Out the Wash.”

Bible verse games will help your kids hide God’s Word in their hearts and for this one you will need to do the following: For this activity you will need 2 clotheslines and a total of 20 clothespins and 20 rags or washcloths.  You will need to be able to tie the clotheslines onto something like chairs.  Each team will have a set of 10 cloths that have a portion of the Scripture written on each.

You can break up the phrases as I have given you below:

1. Jesus Christ loved the church

2. and gave Himself up for her

3. to make her holy,

4. cleansing her

5. by the washing

6. with water through the Word,

7. and to present her to Himself

8. as a radiant church, 9. without stain… 10. but holy and blameless.

Place each set of rags in a laundry basket along with a can or bucket of the 10 clothespins for each team.  You are now ready to play the game.

Divide your class into 2 teams.  Introduce Ephesians 5:25-27.  Hold up a rag for each part of the verse and expound on each phrase in the following way:

1.     The church is made up of all people who believe and have faith in God.

2.     Jesus loves the church so much that He gave His life by dying on the cross.

3.     Jesus died on the cross so that we could be holy.  To be holy means that we should separate ourselves from the world and live for God.

4.     What do we need to be cleansed from?  Our sins.  All that displeases God.

5.     This rag can be used to wash things and make them clean, but it could never wash away our sin.  Only God can.

6.     God’s Word, the Bible, is described as water that washes and cleanses us from all our sin.  Wow!  That means God’s Word is powerful to change lives.

7.     Would you ever consider presenting yourself to a king without looking your best?  I hope not.  We cannot be presented to God unless we have accepted His washing and cleansing of our sins.

8.     God wants His children to be radiant.  He won’t accept anything less.

9.     When we believe that Jesus died to cleanse us from all our sin, we won’t have even a stain of sin found in us.

10. Instead, we will be holy and blameless in the sight of God.

Tell the kids to line up about 5 feet behind the laundry basket.  On the word “GO”, the first kid in each line will go to the basket and try and find the first cloth of the verse.  He can ask his teammates for help, but the rest of his team has to stay 5 feet behind the basket.  Once he finds the cloth, he quickly pins the cloth to the clothesline.  He goes to the back of the line and the next person goes.  The first team who pins all the cloths up in the correct order is the winner.  You could play more than once if you’d like.  Eventually, they should not be allowed to ask for help.
