The “Encourage with Words” Bible Game for Kids

Play the “Encourage with Words” Bible Game for kids to help them learn the importance of being careful with their words. This game is great for any classroom or home where the Bible is taught.

I wrote the “Encourage with Words” Bible Game for kids for my program called “O Be Careful.” This program is based on the wonderful old Sunday School hymn which encourages us to be careful with what we see, hear and say.

God wants us to know that our tongue and what we speak with it, is VERY powerful. The book of Proverbs is filled with great verses that prove this truth. For example, Proverbs 15:1 says this:  A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Or how about  Proverbs 11:11, which says this: By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is torn down.

Wow! Our tongues can turn away wrath and build up or tear down a city?! That’s what I call powerful! What we say can tear down or encourage others. This game will help your kids to encourage each other, which can be a blessing to all.

The “Encourage with Words” Bible Game for kids will introduce 6 Proverbs to your kids all about the power of speech.

Here’s what you need to prepare for the “Encourage with Words” Bible Game for kids:

You will need to prepare 42 cards, that give the following points:

Make 6 cards that say, “You are great!” – worth 100 points

Make 6 cards that say, “You are brilliant!” – worth 200 points

Make 6 cards that say, “You are cool!” – worth 300 points

Make 6 cards that say, “You are fabulous!” – worth 400 points

Make 12 cards that say, “You make me happy!” – worth 100 points

Make 6 cards that say, “Sorry!”

(For a limited time, here are the links to the cards I created for the game. Print them off before I turn this into a product!!)

“You are great!” Cards

“You are brilliant!” Cards

“You are cool!” Cards

“You are fabulous!” Cards

“You make me happy!” Cards

“Sorry!” Cards

Next prepare 42 backings for the point cards with the title of “Encourage with Words Game.”

(For a limited time, here is the link to the backings I created for the game. Print them off before I turn this into a product!!)

Backing Cards

Attach the backings to each point card. You now how all your playing cards. Place all the playing cards on a table or on a pocket chart, point side down. (I always recommend using a pocket chart that is resting on an easel so that your whole class can see the cards. This helps them remain engaged in the game.)

Here are some examples of Pocket Charts from Amazon:

Next, prepare posters or slides of the following 6 Proverbs from the Bible that showcase the verse and a short explanation of the verse to help your kids understand the scripture’s meaning.

For example, for Proverbs 15: 1, the verse says:

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Here is my explanation for Proverbs 15:1: This proverb teaches that your gentle and kind words in an angry situation can actually turn the anger away. The opposite is also true. If your words are mean spirited, you could find yourself in the middle of a battle.

Proverb 2

Proverb 3

Proverb 4

Proverb 5

Proverb 6

Finally, prepare a poster that gives the point values for each encouraging word. such as my picture shows here:

How to play the “Encourage with Words” Bible Game for kids:

Divide your class into 2 teams. Have a child come up from his team. Read the first Proverb and your explanation of the verse. Now, allow the child to go over to the cards and let him pick UP TO 5 cards during his turn. Let him point to a card and then you will be the one to turn it over. Pretend like you are a game show host and make the reveal of the points exciting.

Read the encouraging word on the card and then state how many points it is worth. For example, if the card says, “You are cool!” the card is worth 300 points for the boy’s team. He can now choose to pick another card and you will follow the same line of play adding up the points as he goes. However, if the boy picks a “Sorry!” card, he will lose all the points he accumulated during his turn. Therefore, a child needs to be sure he or she wants to keep picking another card each time.

Play goes back and forth between the teams until all 6 Proverbs have been taught. The team with the most points, wins!

  • Hi Rebecca, Thank you so much for stopping by my site! I really appreciate it! The cards are small because you are going to make 42 of them and place them on a pocket chart or table. 42 cards will fill up most pocket charts and it will be very visual and engaging for the kids. Hope this is helpful. Blessings!

  • I really appreciate your work and games you prepare. I was wondering why the cards are so small for this game. Can you post them in a larger size so that they can be seen easier in the card pocket holder?
