1. Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:

If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

We all have days when we “fall down.” We might “fall down” by getting mad over a bad grade. We might “fall down” by getting sad when you see your parents fight. But when you have a good friend in your life, that friend will hopefully lift you up and encourage you with word of love and care.

Question: Can you tell us about a time when your friend encouraged you when you had a bad day?

2. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Colossians 3:12-14

Friends are great! But every friendship has its ups and downs. For example, sooner or later, your friend will hurt your feelings. As a Christian, you need to make the choice to forgive your friend just as Jesus has forgiven you. Remember, you might be the one who needs forgiveness next time.

Question: Can you tell us about a time when you forgave your friend for hurting you?

3. Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared.

Proverbs 22:24-25

Being around an angry person can be very uncomfortable. Sometimes angry people are unsafe. This Bible verse encourages you to make friends that don’t get easily angered. If you are always around an angry person, you might end up being angry all the time, too.

Question: Can you tell us about a time when your friend got angry? How did their anger make you feel?

4. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Luke 6:31

This Bible verse is known as the “Golden Rule.” It’s a great verse for every friendship. Basically, it should remind you to be the kind of friend that you want others to be to you. For example, if you are a good listener to your friend, hopefully your friend will listen to you.

Question: Can you tell us 2 ways that you think you are a good friend to others?

5. Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.

Proverbs 13:20

Another word for companion is friend. This verse says that it is important to hang around friends who are wise. Wise people do what is right according to what God says is right. If you hang around friends who are foolish and who often do what is wrong, you might end up in the middle of trouble.

Question: Can you tell us about a time when you helped your friend do the right thing instead of doing something wrong?

6. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
You are my friends if you do what I command.
I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

John 15:12-15

This Bible verse is all about how Jesus will call you His friend if you obey Him. If you obey Jesus, it also means you love Jesus. Jesus will be the best friend you will ever have. He will always do what is best for you. He laid down His life for you by dying on the cross for your sins. There’s no greater friend than Jesus.

Question: Can you tell us about a time when you showed your love to Jesus?

7. The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.

Proverbs 12:26

You can’t choose your parents, but you can choose your friends. Therefore, take great care in whom you choose to be your friend. Stay away from people who do wrong things that might get you or others into trouble.

Question: Can you tell us 2 things that you like about a friend that you chose?

8. You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

James 4:4

What does it mean to be a friend of the world? It can mean that you follow the ways of people in the world rather than following God. This world is full of people who do not love God and they do lots of wrong things such as lying, stealing and hurting others. You need to be friends with God who will always lead you to do what is right.

Question: Can you tell us 2 ways that God has shown you that He is a good friend?

9. As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Proverbs 27:17

This is a famous Bible verse about friendship. But what does iron have to do with being a friend. This verse is giving an example of how a person who works with metal gets his tools sharpened. For example, if a metal worker wants to sharpen an iron knife, he will rub it with another piece of iron. As the two pieces of metal rub together, they create something good. As a friend, you need to be honest and tell your friend how you are feeling, even if it feels hard, like 2 pieces of metal rubbing together. By speaking the truth in love, you both will walk away better for it.

Question: Can you tell us about a time when you had to tell your friend something difficult?

10. A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.

Proverbs 17:17

A good friend will love you through all the ups and downs of life. Adversity is a word that means trouble or hardship. When a friend loves you even through the really difficult times, it’s like he becomes more than a friend to you. It’s as though he becomes like a brother to you.

Question: Can you tell us if you have a friend that feels like a brother or sister to you? What makes them so special to you?
