Bible Story Pictures for when Jesus Died on the Cross
The following story is based on the retelling from Hurlburt’s Story of the Bible. This book is a compilation of Bible stories written in 1904. The story is taken from the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

And so Pontius Pilate, the Governor of Rome, gave orders to have Jesus die upon the cross.
Picture 2
The Roman soldiers took Jesus and beat him very badly and then led Him to a place called Golgotha where He would die to forgive your sin and mine.
Picture 3
There was a great crowd of people around Jesus who wanted to see Him die. Some of the women who had helped Jesus, were now crying because He was going to die.
Picture 4
The soldiers tried to make Jesus carry His own cross, but it was too heavy for him. So, the soldiers grabbed a man named Simon to carry the cross for Jesus.
Picture 5
When they came to the place where Jesus would die, they laid Jesus upon the wooden cross and drove nails through His hands and feet to make Him stay on the cross. Jesus prayed to God the Father and said, “Father, forgive them because they do not know what they are doing.”
Picture 6
The soldiers took the clothes of Jesus. They began gambling for His undergarment to see who would get it.
Picture 7
Two men who had been robbers and who were also going to die on a cross were placed next to Jesus. One man was on His right and the other man was on His left.
Picture 8
Over the head of Jesus was a sign that said, This is Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” As people passed by Jesus, they made fun of Him. Even the priests who worked in the Temple of God were mean to Jesus and said, “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself. Come down from the cross, and we will believe in you!”
One of the robbers dying on the cross next to Jesus said, “If you are the Christ, save yourself and save us!” But the other robber said, “Don’t you fear God? We deserve to die, but this man Jesus, has done nothing wrong.” Then this robber said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus said to the robber, “Today, you will be with me in Heaven.”
Picture 9
At the cross of Jesus, his mother Mary was standing near. She was very sad and right next to her stood one of Jesus’ disciples named John. Jesus wanted John to take care of his mother since he would be leaving. Therefore, on that day, John took Mary to his home and cared for her like she was his own mother.

Around noontime, when the sun is usually high in the sky, a sudden darkness came over the land, which lasted for three hours. Then, in the middle of the afternoon, Jesus cried out to God in terrible pain and said, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Picture 11
Then Jesus said that he was thirsty. Someone dipped a sponge in a cup of vinegar, and put it on a long stick so that Jesus could drink from it. Then Jesus spoke his last words and said, “It is finished! Father, into your hands I give my spirit!”
Picture 12
Then Jesus died. At that moment, the very large and thick curtain that hung in the Temple of God, tore from top to bottom.

The Roman officer who had been in charge of the soldiers around the cross saw what had taken place, and how Jesus had died, and he said, “Truly, this was a righteous man. He was the Son of God.”
