Psalm 119:11 says this: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” My daughter loved to hide things when she was a little girl. She would take some of my nic-nacs and bury them in different nooks and crannies around the house. Sometimes, it was years later that I found them! God wants us to hide His Word in our hearts. Not just single verses, but also full stories. Here is a fun Sunday School lesson from the Bible to help your kids learn some of God’s great stories as well as Ps 119:11. It’s called “Hiding God’s Stories.”
Here’s what you do:
For this activity, you will need to prepare a shoebox with a lid by adding a colorful label, which says “God’s Story Box.” It would also be nice for you to add some question marks all over it. You will also need to prepare 12 “Bible Story” cards from the list of stories I have provided for you below. You can simply write the title of the story on an index card or get creative and add pictures to the title. You will also need to have the list of clues that you will give to the children for each story. You are now ready to play this Bible review game.
How to play:
Divide your class into 2 teams. Have your stack of “Bible Story” cards hidden from the children. Pick one card and carefully hide it inside your story box. Begin the game by giving one clue to team one of the story in the box. If they guess the story, they will earn 50 points. They can earn an extra 50 points if someone on their team can recite Psalm 119:11. If team one did not guess the story correctly, then team two is given a clue. Play goes back and forth 4 times. If the story was not guessed, this card is just discarded and a new card is added to the box.
Before playing this Sunday school lesson from the Bible you may want to introduce it in the following way:
Who can give me one good reason for knowing God’s wonderful Bible stories? (Wait for response such as, “They teach us about God.” Or “They help us learn what people were like in the Bible.” Or “They show us how to live our lives.”) These are all good reasons. Who would like to read Psalm 119:11? (Wait for a child to read the verse.) What does it mean to hide God’s Word in our heart? (Wait for responses such as, “knowing it really well or memorizing it.”) God wants us to hide His Word in our hearts so that it will be forever with us and so that it touches every part of our lives. No one can live without their heart. Likewise no one can truly have the life God wants for them without knowing His Word. Let’s play a fun activity to see how well you know some of God’s stories and to help you memorize Psalm 119:11.
At this point, you will want to have your class recite Psalm 119:11 several times to help them be more successful in this game. Have fun!
