Vacation Bible School might be one of the greatest evangelical venues of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Only our Lord knows how many countless children across America and in other countries have accepted the Lord Jesus as their Savior during one of these great events. I myself have participated in many Vacation Bible Schools over the years and I have always enjoyed being part of them. In fact, I often feel like I am a little part of history when I lead, volunteer, or perform at a VBS.

The history of VBS can be traced back to a city in Illinois in 1894. A Sunday School teacher named D. T. Miles was a teacher in the public school system. She felt her students needed more time to spend in Bible study. Therefore, “she started a daily Bible school to teach children during the summer. The first Bible school enrolled forty students and lasted four weeks. A local school was used for classes, while an adjoining park was used for recess.”(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacation_Bible_School)

A little farther east, a children’s director named Eliza Hawes of a Baptist church in New York City “started an ‘Everyday Bible School’ for slum children at a rented beer parlor in New York’s East Side. Hawes continued her efforts for seven years.”  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacation_Bible_School)

Word began to spread to other teachers of Ms. Hawes’ success and “summer schools” began popping up all over the country. Today, Vacation Bible School is responsible for the evangelization of hundreds of thousands of children. Many curriculums exist for the purpose of VBS to help create a week filled with Scripture-filled activities that all point to Jesus.

On this page you will find several Vacation Bible School ideas that will go with any VBS curriculum you choose. Many of the ideas are “time fillers.” So, take a few moments and browse through the list to find an activity just right for your kiddos.

“Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all of your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.”
