Spotting Lies About God – Watch Out for Spiders | The Scripture Lady

by | Nov 27, 2010 | Bible Object Lessons, The Blog

Warning sign with a large black spider and text 'Watch out for Spiders'.

This Bible object lesson will help kids recognize lies people tell about God, and for this one you will need the following:

  • 🕸️ A pretend spider web with a spider (optional: a fly on a skewer to “fly” toward the web)

🙋 Ask the following questions to spark discussion:

  1. What am I holding up? (Hold up the web.)
  2. What does a spider use his web for?
  3. Did you know people who pretend to love God can spin lies about Him, just like a spider spins a web?

4. What are some lies you’ve heard about God? (E.g., “God doesn’t care what you do,” “God didn’t really create the world.”)

Ask a child to read Isaiah 59:5, then walk through these three points together:

1️⃣ What a spider’s web is for. It traps its prey — nothing gets out once it’s caught.

2️⃣ How lies about God work the same way. People who don’t really love God sometimes spin webs of lies, hoping to trap real Christians into doubting Jesus or the Bible. Watch out for teaching that doesn’t match what Scripture actually says.

3️⃣ Spider webs are weak. They tear easily. When you hear a lie about God, grab your “broom of truth” — what the Bible actually says — and knock it right down. Then rest in the truth instead of getting tangled up.

Suggestions for Success:

  1. Let kids “swat” the fake web with a rolled-up paper “broom” during Point 3 — great physical reinforcement.
  2. Keep a few real examples of common lies-about-God ready in case kids draw a blank on Question 4.
  3. Reuse the web prop for any lesson on discernment or false teaching.

This 3-point format was inspired by C.H. Spurgeon’s devotional on Isaiah 59:5 in Morning and Evening.

Kids hear more mixed messages about God than we sometimes realize — from friends, from shows, from all over. I love that this lesson gives them something concrete to picture when they hear something that doesn’t sound quite right. The ‘broom of truth’ line always gets a laugh too!
