Have you ever wondered how to help a preschooler memorize John 3:16? It’s one of the most beloved verses in all of Scripture — and the good news is, your little ones are more ready for it than you might think!

With the right visuals and hands-on activities, even the youngest learners can begin to hide God’s Word in their hearts. Today I’m sharing 5 fun, creative ways to teach John 3:16 to your preschoolers that will make Bible time something they look forward to every week.

Here’s the verse we’ll be learning together:

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” — John 3:16 (NKJV)

It may look like a lot of words for a little one — but just wait until you try these ideas. You may be amazed at what your children can do!

1. For God So Loved the World: A Bible Memory Verse Activity for John 3:16

This active, movement-based activity is perfect for children’s church, Sunday School, or homeschool Bible time. It combines a simple missions concept with verse memorization — and kids absolutely love it!

The Big Idea: Tell children that missionaries travel all over the world to share Jesus. Then use that idea to help them say John 3:16 while “traveling the world” together.

What You’ll Need:

  • Pictures of different countries or people from different countries (printable cards provided below)
  • A bag to hold the cards
  • A large circle drawn on the floor (to represent the world)

How to Teach the Verse with Motions:

Teach children these motions as they say the verse together:

  • For God — point up high
  • so loved — criss-cross arms across chest
  • the world — raise hands above head in a big circle
  • that He gave — palms down, then flip up and forward like giving a gift
  • His one — hold up one index finger
  • only Son — stretch arms wide like a cross
  • that whoever — fan arms out toward everyone
  • believes in Him — tap index finger to the side of your head
  • will not perish — shake index finger back and forth
  • but have eternal life — start with crossed hands low, then sweep them up high

How to Play:

Have children gather around the edge of the circle on the floor. Explain that not everyone in the world knows about Jesus — and that’s why God needs people willing to go and share His love!

Run around the circle together while saying the verse. After each round, let one child pull a country or person card from the bag and place it inside the “world.” Then everyone shouts, “Jesus loves you!”

Tip: If the full verse feels like too much, start with just “For God so loved the world” and build from there. You know your kids best!

2. John 3:16: A Bible Verse Song

I love putting Scripture to music — and John 3:16 was one of the very first Bible verse songs I ever wrote! I gave it a fun Hawaiian flavor, and it has been a classroom favorite ever since.

I’m sharing two versions of this song with you today:

Watch the moves version here:

Teach children the moves, play the song, and watch them light up as they sing God’s Word right back to you. There is nothing quite like hearing a preschooler belt out John 3:16!

3. Preach It, Preacher!: A Bible Activity for John 3:16

Preschoolers love getting gifts — from Grandma, from birthdays, from anywhere! So it’s never too early to teach them that God is the greatest gift-giver of all. This activity helps children discover all the wonderful gifts God has given us, with John 3:16 as the foundation.

What You’ll Need:

  • 3 posters with pictures of God’s gifts (see lists below)
  • Duplicate pictures for the “congregation” to hold
  • A small suit blazer for the “preacher” to wear (trust me — this detail makes it extra special!

Poster One:

  • God’s Son (use a picture of a cross)
  • Animals/pets
  • Flowers
  • Food

Poster Two:

  • God’s Love (use a picture of a heart)
  • Water
  • A Home
  • Toys

Poster Three:

  • Friendship
  • Family
  • The Bible
  • Sun, Moon, and Stars

How to Play:

Choose one child to be the “preacher” and let them wear the blazer. Hand out the duplicate gift pictures to the rest of the class — they are the “congregation.”

Give the preacher a poster to hold up and guide them through this simple sermon script (have them repeat after you):

“Welcome to our church! Today’s sermon is about God’s gifts. God loves to give gifts! Here are four gifts God has given us. God has given us ___________.”

When each gift is named, the child holding that picture stands up and shouts, “Hallelujah!” — then sits back down. Rotate preachers for each new poster.

Open with this question to set the stage: “Raise your hand and tell me the best gift you have ever received!” (Wait for responses.) “Did you know that God loves to give gifts too? Our Bible verse, John 3:16, tells us that He gave us the greatest gift of all — His own Son, Jesus!”

4. Carmen and Jack & Jill Sing "Jesus Loves Me"

John 3:16 is all about God’s great love — and what better way to celebrate that love than with a song?

I’m sharing two very special videos with you today featuring some of my favorite friends!

First, meet my cousin Carmen! Carmen brings a little Latin flavor to the classic “Jesus Loves Me, This I Know” — and she will absolutely delight your preschoolers.

5. The "Who Does God Love?" Heart

John 3:16 tells us that God loves the world — but it’s so important for every preschooler to know that God specifically loves them.

This simple, magical activity has been one of my favorites for over 30 years, and the children never tire of it.

What You’ll Need:

  • A heart-shaped box (found easily around Valentine’s Day — or any time at craft stores)
  • A small mirror that fits inside the box
  • Secure the mirror safely inside the box before your lesson

    How It Works:

Tell children you have something very special to show them — something that will reveal exactly who God loves.

Ask: “Would you like to know who God loves?” (Of course, they’ll all shout “Yes!”)

One by one, invite each child to come up and peek inside the box. When they see themselves in the mirror, most children break into the biggest grin.

Ask them: “Who does God love?”

    They’ll say: “ME!”

Then speak this truth over them: “For God so loved [child’s name] — that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life!”

Tip: Keep the mirror hidden until each child’s turn so the surprise stays magical for everyone in the room!

This activity takes just a few minutes, but the impact lasts far longer than that. There is something powerful about a child seeing their own face and hearing God’s Word spoken directly over them.

Teaching preschoolers John 3:16 is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. They may be small, but God’s Word is taking root in their hearts every single time you open the Bible with them. Keep going — you are doing something that truly matters for eternity! 🙏
