Try using this “Bible Story Order Song” for the story of Jonathan and David to help your children learn one of the greatest examples of friendship in the Bible — from the day these two became friends to the promise they made to each other before David had to flee.
This song is a song, a game, and a story all rolled into one!
When I use my “Bible Story Order Song” format, I use a banner I created called my “Bible Story Order Banner.” It has pockets that hold pictures showcasing the events of the story.
Next to the banner, I keep a pocket chart holding all the pictures for the story.
As I sing, I pause and let a child come find the picture we just sang about, then place it on the banner in the correct order.

Lyrics
Bible stories have a beginning
Bible stories have an end
Bible stories have some middle parts too
Let’s learn about this story
From the beginning to the end
We will learn more about God because it’s true
Talking: Let’s learn about Jonathan and David
Our story begins
After David slays Goliath
King Saul was very pleased with David’s skill
King Saul invited David
To live inside his house
It was important to obey the king’s will
Who can find the first picture of our story?
Take a pause.
In the next part of our story
We learn of King Saul’s son
Jonathan was his name. Now this we know.
Jonathan and David
Became the best of friends
Jonathan gave his new friend gifts – his sword and bow
Who can find the second picture of our story?
Take a pause.
The plot is getting thicker
King Saul becomes jealous
He wanted Jonathan to be king
But God had other plans
God wanted David in command
The king’s anger made him do terrible things
Who can find the third picture of our story?
Take a pause.
The next part finds
David hiding in the fields
He was scared of King Saul’s anger so he ran
He needed to hear from his friend Jon
Was David safe or should he move on
Jonathan was making a great plan
Who can find the fourth picture of our story?
Take a pause.
The next day was a banquet
David didn’t plan to go
He wanted to stay far away from King Saul
Jonathan would shoot an arrow
In the field as a sign
Was David safe or in danger of a fall?
Who can find the fifth picture of our story?
Take a pause.
We’re to the end of our story
I’m afraid this part is sad
Jonathan’s arrow showed that danger was ahead
David would have to go
And see Jonathan no more
They promised to be friends to the very end
Who can find the last picture of our story?
Take a pause.
