Jesus Knows Our Sorrows – Sorrowful Sobs | The Scripture Lady

by | Nov 27, 2010 | Bible Object Lessons, The Blog

Close-up of a crying baby expressing sorrowful sobs.

This Bible object lesson will help kids trust that Jesus knows and cares about their sadness, and for this one you will need the following:

  • 👶 A recording of a baby crying (searchable free online)

🙋 Ask the following questions to spark discussion:

  1. What is this sound? (Play the recording.)
  2. Do you ever feel sad? When?
  3. Ask a child to read Exodus 3:7 — isn’t it comforting that God knows when we’re sad?
  • Walk through these three points together:

1️⃣ Sad days happen to everyone. Even as a Christian, hard things will happen — but Jesus knows all about it.

2️⃣ Three ways Jesus cares for you. He’s your Doctor (He knows exactly what you need to heal). He’s your Potter (He shapes even hard things into something good). He’s your Head (He wants to fill your thoughts with His comfort and love).

3️⃣ Trust Him in both joy and sorrow. The best Doctor, the greatest Potter, and the Head of the body — that’s who’s caring for you.

    Suggestions for Success:

    1. Let kids each share one thing that makes them sad before moving to Point 2 — naming it helps.
    2. The Doctor/Potter/Head trio works well as a simple recap chant at the end.
    3. This pairs well with a prayer time inviting kids to bring their sadness to God right then.

This 3-point format was inspired by C.H. Spurgeon’s devotional on Exodus 3:7 in Morning and Evening.

Childhood isn’t always as carefree as we’d like to think, and I wanted kids to know their sadness matters to God too. The Doctor/Potter/Head picture has stuck with me for years — I hope it does the same for your kids.
