This is one of those object lessons that kids remember for years. It’s simple to prepare, visually stunning, and it teaches a truth every child needs to hear: even when we can’t see the stars — or Jesus — with our own eyes, God is still near, and He will never leave us.
Bible object lesson for kids will bring the wonder of Creation to life in an unforgettable way, and for this one you will need the following:

***Note: The tube that is used in
the presentation video is no longer sold. However, there is a good alternative also sold by MagicTricks.com. It is called the “Jumbo Ghost Tube.” It is bigger, but it works the same way as the one I used. You also probably want to cover it in a black material to reflect the same aesthetic that the original tube shows. And instead of using magnets on the foam stars, you could attach small pieces of double sided tape to make them stick to the tube.
- Small foam stars, smiley-face style recommended — https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/22615
- Sparkly sequined ribbon or similar (craft store)
- Foam or glittery craft star shapes (full sheet for cutting)
- A button, to mark the end of the garland
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Magnetic tape (optional, for attaching foam stars to the tube)
- Needle and thread
- Black cloth or fabric for the display background
- Optional: a small riser or box to raise the tube so seated children can’t see over it
- A small butter knife or similar tool, to help push the garland into the tube
🛠️ How to Prepare
1. Make the stars. Cut craft-star shapes from foam sheets if they aren’t pre-cut. Hot-glue the foam stars onto the sequined ribbon, spacing as desired (about 15 stars works well).
2. Finish the garland. Tie off the ribbon in a few knots for structure, then sew a small button to one end so you can quickly find it later.
3. Add magnetic backing (optional). Attach small strips of magnetic tape to the back of the foam stars if you’d like them to stick to the tube or display surface.
4. Load the tube. Note the seam on the metal tube — that’s the back. Tuck the button end of the garland in first, button facing up so it’s easy to spot. Stuff the rest of the garland in, using the butter knife to nudge it down if needed. Place three foam stars on top, happy-face down, so they’re ready to produce first.
5. Set the stage. Cover your riser or table with black cloth to mimic the night sky and make the stars pop. Place the tube on the riser, seam at the back, opening facing your audience.

🌟 Presenting the Lesson
1. Memorize the short poem ahead of time — watch the presentation video below to practice timing.
2. Show the class you’re looking through the tube, and use your hand to show that nothing is visible yet. This builds the illusion.
3. Produce the three foam stars one by one to begin the effect.
4. At the poem’s cue, grasp and pull firmly to reveal the full garland of stars, bringing it around and laying it out on the black cloth.
5. Let the children take in the sparkle, and land the lesson: even when the stars — or Jesus — can’t be seen, they are still there, and still near.

💡 Suggestions for Success
1. Practice the sleight and timing a few times before presenting — a smooth reveal makes the illusion land.
2. Keep the seam-side orientation consistent when loading, so the button end is always easy to find.
3. The black fabric background makes a bigger difference than you’d expect — it’s what makes the sparkle really pop for little eyes.

🙏 Closing Reflection
Every time I present this lesson, I love watching the children’s faces as the stars appear — there’s real wonder in that moment. And that wonder is exactly what makes the truth stick: God is near, even when we can’t see Him. I pray this lesson plants that promise deep in your students’ hearts, just as it has in mine.
