This Philippians 1:6 graduation certificate for children was inspired by a wonderful talk with a lady I met at the recent CMTA Children’s Ministry Conference. This lady is a preschool teacher at a Christian school. She loves being with the children and she shared with me that graduation time is always a bit hard for her. She said that it is difficult for her to see the children she has been with for the past 2 to 3 years leave her “nest.” As a Christian, she has been pouring into her children the truths of Jesus and prayerfully has been planting seeds of love, grace and truth in their hearts. Many of her “graduates” will head off to public schools where Jesus cannot be talked about. She is concerned that all her labors of sharing Jesus will be fruitless. But then one day, she said the Lord reminded her of Philippians 1:6, which says, “…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (NIV)
Philippians 1:6 can be a great encouragement for all of us who pour our time into the lives of children. Jesus loves children VERY much! They hold no less of a space in His heart than adults. The work that Jesus begins in every child’s heart is just as important as the work He does in those of us who are older. And Philippians 1:6 holds a promise that should not be overlooked. Jesus Christ, Himself, will finish the work that he started.
Wherever your children go in this world, you should be confident that any seeds the Holy Spirit planted in their lives through your faithfulness will not go untended by Jesus, our great Gardener.
Another verse that should be an encouragement to us as we watch our children graduate is Proverbs 22:6, which says: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
By faith, we as parents and teachers can stand on these promises. Promises that come from our Lord who loves each of your children deeply.
