Let’s Bake Some Cookies is one of my favorite Bible object lessons — perfect for the Christmas season, or really any time of year you want to share the sweetness of Jesus with your kids. Your children will delight in this lesson’s “magical” twist as you teach about the goodness and sweetness of Jesus.
This lesson was created for my 2017 Christmas program. I wanted a creative way to show how sweet it is to have Jesus in our lives. “Baking” cookies gives the perfect opportunity to remind kids that Jesus is the Bread of Life, and that He wants us to
spread His sweetness wherever we go. With a few eye-catching props and a fun script, your kids will be amazed — and will want to know how you pulled it off!

The Script:
(Presenter has a mixing bowl and all ingredients set out in front of the children.)
“I have everything I need here to make two wonderful, magical cookies! I’ve got my mixing bowl to mix all my ingredients in.
The first ingredient that most cookies need is good old flour. You know, flour is also in bread. Did you know that Jesus is called the Bread of Life? I think He has that name because, like bread feeds our stomachs, Jesus feeds our very souls with His Word and with all His goodness and His love. Okay, in goes the flour!
The next ingredient we need is some salt. Now, am I going to use all this salt for only two cookies? No way — they would taste awful! No, we just need a pinch of salt. You know what the Bible says? That as Christians, we are to be the salt of the earth. I think that means God wants us to add just enough flavor to all those around us so that they are drawn to know God and His Son Jesus more.
Ooh, the next ingredient is the best — oh my goodness, it’s sugar! What is a cookie without sugar? And what is a Christian without the goodness and sweetness of God in their lives? Okay, in goes all of that sugar.
And then I’ve got some baking powder. Baking powder helps things rise — who wants flat cookies? Not me! Did you know that God wants us to rise to every occasion to share His goodness and love with all those around us? So, let’s add the baking powder.
All righty — next comes the butter. You know, my motto is: real bakers use real butter!
And then, of course, we need the egg — the exciting, extraordinary egg in our cookie. (Crack the egg into the bowl.)
And then I need the icing on my cookies. What? You say I shouldn’t put the icing on yet — that it should go on after the cookies are baked? Oh, but you’ve forgotten — these are wonderful, magical cookies! No, the icing goes on right now. (Add the icing.) And if I put icing on, I’ve got to have the sprinkles — red, white, and green, leftover from Christmas! In they go.
Oh my goodness, I have everything I need in my little mixing bowl to make two wonderful, magical cookies. Now, believe it or not, my mixing bowl is going to turn into an oven for my magical cookies. (Place the lid onto the mixing bowl, tilting it down and away from the children so the hidden load pan can’t be seen.)
I’ve got my timer, and we’re going to count to three — when the bell rings, I think our cookies will be done! Count with me: 1… 2… 3! (Ring the bell.)
I think they’re ready! Do you believe that I’ve made two magical, wonderful cookies? Let’s find out! (Lift the lid to reveal the two finished cookies.)
Oh my goodness — two wonderful cookies! Yep, it’s a great way to celebrate the goodness of God.”
How the Trick Works:
This lesson uses a classic magic prop called a chick pan (also known as a dove pan), traditionally used by magicians to “produce” small items like chicks, doves, or rabbits. Here, it produces two ready-made cookies. (Click HERE to be taken to one of my favorite vendors for this prop that comes from MagicTricks.com.)
A chick pan has three parts: the lid (with small metal tabs on both sides), the load pan hidden inside it (holding your two pre-made cookies), and the bottom pan — your visible “mixing bowl” — which has indentations that must line up with dots on the lid to release the load pan correctly.
Ingredients used (small amounts, since you’re only making two cookies): 2 tablespoons flour, a pinch of salt, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1/4 teaspoon baking powder, one thin slice of butter (too thick and the load pan won’t release), 1 egg, a tube of white icing (to match store-bought vanilla cookies with white frosting), and about 2 teaspoons of sprinkles (red, white, and green for Christmas — adapt the colors for any season). A small bell or timer adds a fun final touch.
Presentation tips: Buy real cookies ahead of time and match your icing and sprinkle colors to them for a realistic reveal. Line up the dots on the lid with the indentations on the bottom pan, or the load pan won’t release. When placing the lid on top, tilt it down and away from the children — not up toward them — so no one sees underneath. Give it a gentle push to seat it, then simply lift to reveal the cookies.
