Love Overflowing: A Gospel Magic Trick for “Elephant’s Toothpaste”

by | Mar 13, 2014 | Bible Object Lessons, Gospel Magic Tricks, The Blog

Here is a fun Gospel magic trick to teach

about God’s overflowing love!

Ages: 4–10 | Time: 15–20 minutes (plus cleanup) — Adult setup required.

Have you ever wished you had more of God’s love? Me too. This simple gospel magic trick uses the popular “Elephant Toothpaste” science demonstration to create an exciting, overflowing eruption that visually illustrates God’s endless love. With a short presenter script and a dramatic finale, this magic trick is an easy, memorable way for teachers and parents to help kids learn about love, prayer, and Bible truth.

Check out the following video which shows me sharing this trick to some teachers at a workshop. Forgive the poor quality. This was shot with a camera phone several years ago. But it will give you a nice feel for how the presentation can go.

What you will need for this Gospel magic trick:

Safety first: adult setup only — Keep a small bag or bin for used materials and clean-up supplies.

You will need some kind of large container about the size of a large turkey pan. I actually use a foil pan that is big enough to cook a turkey in. Its sides are about 3″ high.

You will need an empty one liter water bottle. Take off the label.

You will need a small juice glass.

You will need one packet of Active Dry Yeast. DO NOT use fast acting yeast. The trick won’t work as well.

You will need enough warm water to dissolve the yeast in, no more than a 1/4 cup.

You will need approximately 2 cups of 40 Volume Clear Hydrogen Peroxide; also known as stabilizer formula (This is what people bleach their hair with). I purchase mine at my local beauty store. The brand name I use is Salon Care. Be aware, you cannot use “normal” hydrogen peroxide from the drug store. It is not powerful enough to give a great effect.

Salon Care 40 Volume Clear Developer

Salon Care 40 Volume Clear Developer is the chemical that will make this Gospel magic trick come to life. When added with the yeast, a fun "explosion" will take place that will be sure to delight ALL your children!

You will need about 13 drops of red food coloring to get a nice blood red color.

You will need a glass carafe or some kind of attractive glass bottle that will hold the peroxide.

You will need about a teaspoon of liquid dish soap.

You will need a funnel.

You will need the following two labels found on this page: Labels for the carafe and water bottle

God’s Love – Attach this label to your carafe.

YOU – Attach this label to your empty water bottle. Make sure is really sticks even if it gets wet.

Perfect for young magicians!

How to prepare for this Gospel magic trick:

Quick checklist (do this 5–10 minutes before your presentation):

• Remind volunteers that an adult handles the peroxide and yeast.

• Attach the two labels as directed above (God’s Love on the carafe; YOU on the empty bottle).

• Pour the hydrogen peroxide into the carafe and add the drops of red food coloring until you get a vivid color.

• Pour about a teaspoon of dish soap into the empty water bottle and set the bottle in the center of the turkey pan to catch the foam.

• Dissolve the packet of yeast in no more than 1/4 cup warm water and keep the yeast cup nearby; do not add the yeast until you are ready to perform.

Stage notes and safety:

Keep the audience a safe distance (6–8 feet), have a rinsing jug and paper towels on hand, and plan for safe disposal of the foam. You can dispose the foam into a normal sink.

DO NOT LET THE CHILDREN TOUCH THE FOAM. If you or a child has cuts on your/their hands and you/they touch the foam, you could experience a light stinging sensation. Feel free to use gloves if this is the case.

What to practice: rehearse the three pour points with timing cues and practice pouring amounts so the final eruption happens when you want it to. This trick is a clear, visual way to teach gospel truth—the way God’s love fills us and overflows into others.

Here is the script that goes nicely with this Gospel magic trick that I have adapted from Chris Koch, Risen Christ Director of Children’s and Youth Ministries

Opening / Engagement

Who would like to have more of God’s love?

You? You? You? Me too!

But how do we get or grow in God’s love?

Let’s let this empty bottle remind you of you…or you…or you. (Point to children in the audience.)

Let’s let this pretty bottle remind us of God’s love. The red can remind us of the blood that Jesus shed for each of us for the forgiveness of sin.

Three Truth Pours (use as cue points)

Now, back to my question. How do we grow or get filled with more of God’s love?

(During each of the following 3 statements, pour part of the peroxide into the bottle. Expect some bubbling because of the dish soap — keep your focus on the talk.)

[Pour 1/3 of the peroxide]

“We get filled with God’s love when we hear that Jesus died on the cross and rose again for our sins.”

[Pour 1/3 of the peroxide]

“We get more of God’s love when we find out that He is a Father to us and loves us like we are His children.”

[Pour the remaining peroxide]

“We get even more love when we find out that He is never going to leave us and is always there for us.”

Knowing and believing these truths are great ways for our love to grow.

Transition to Demonstration / Prayer Metaphor

But have you ever wished you had so much love that it would just pour over into other people’s lives — your friends, your family, or the people you meet every day?

How can this happen?

In 1 Peter 1:22, Peter says, “Love one another deeply from the heart.” I believe this kind of deep love grows through prayer.

I have here a glass of dissolved yeast. (Hold up the yeast.) Yeast makes things grow, right? Like bread.

Now let’s let this yeast represent your prayers to God — prayers that ask Him to help your love grow so it overflows to those around you.

Demo Cue

Let’s add our prayers to what we already know is true about God and see what happens.

(Add the dissolved yeast to the peroxide — almost immediately you will have a wonderful eruption that keeps going for a few minutes. The kids will go wild!)

Wrap-up & Application

(After the excitement dies down)

WOW! When God fills us up with His love it spills out of us and we can share that love with others.

I want you to remember to keep filling yourselves with God’s love — through prayer, reading the Bible, and listening to people who tell you about Jesus. When you do this, God’s love will overflow to everyone you meet.

Presenter Notes & Variations

  • Stage directions: [Direct children to stand back 6–8 feet], [Allow 30–60 seconds for the main eruption], [Have a rinsing jug and paper towels ready]. – Age adjustments: For preschool groups, simplify language (“God’s love fills you and spills over”) and shorten the interactive parts; for older elementary, add a short discussion question about ways they can pray for others.

Hi Tracy, Sorry for the delay! I am so glad you let me know that you tried the 3% hp and that it worked. The kids always love the result! Blessings to you and the kids you minister to!

  4. Kathy Vincent

Hi Laurel, I am so sorry for the delay in getting back to you! I believe the yeast cannot sit for that long. The temperature of the water needs to be quite hot as well, so it all should be done fairly quickly. Blessings to you!

  5. Laurel

Wondering if the yeast can be mixed and be used about an hour later. Thanks for all you do

Hi Nichole, So sorry for the delay in getting back to you! You can only use hydrogen peroxide that is 40 volume. It’s the peroxide that women use to bleach their hair. I purchase mine form a beauty supply store such as “Sally’s Beauty Supply.” Hope this is helpful. Blessings!

  7. NICHOLE

I can not find the correct peroxide…… is there another way to do this? What about vinegar?

  8. Jessica Price

    Hello,
I am a bit confused on your directions that you have in your parentheses when pouring the peroxide into the containers. It says to pour some of the peroxide into the bottle a little with each statement and then under each statement it says to pour it into the glass container. Could you please clear this up for me? I am excited to share this with my class.

    Thank you,
    Jessica

So awesome! I really love this trick and as you know now, the kids do too! Thanks for sharing!

  10. Arienne

I shared this with our kids at our Easter egg hunt today. I love that it tells the gospel message. They really liked it! One child wanted to add more of God’s love at the end. 🙂

  11. Kathy Vincent

The peroxide is safe to touch as long as you don’t have any cuts or scrapes. It can give a little burning sensation if you get it in a cut on your skin. But otherwise it is pretty harmless. I just throw it down the sink. Blessings!

So sorry for the delay of this reply! I missed seeing this message. So thrilled that you got to share this trick. The kids really love it! Blessings to you!

Hi Zeth, I don’t know if it will still work. You’ll just have to try it. Blessings to you and your ministry!

  14. Zeth

If I use the CLairoxide will it work as well as the other since it is 40 Clairoxide?

  15. Adrienne

How do I go about cleaning this up though? Is it safe to touch? Ok to through in outside trash can?

  16. Adrienne

Thank you for this tut and also for telling where to get the Hydrogen Peroxide… I wanted to do this science experiment with my niece in the past but didn’t know what 6% Hydrogen Peroxide was, as they have it listed in the other tuts, instead of the normal 3%. I had called around to several drug stores and everywhere I could think of trying to find it and gave up because I didn’t want to use the regular peroxide and it be lame… so now that I found this I’m going to use your lesson for my kid’s church class tonight which my niece is in… so excited to use such a cool experiment to show her and the other kids the immensity of God’s Love!

  17. Kathy Vincent

Yes. The peroxide will bleach carpet and clothing. You just have to be careful with it. I’ve never had an accident yet and I’ve performed many, many times. Don’t worry and have fun. The kids will LOVE it!

  18. Margaret

I am would like to use this lesson next month as we focus on God’s love.
However, I am concerned about the peroxide. If spilled, will it take color out of carpet?
