Father Abraham Song with a New Twist – Preschool Song & Elementary Bible Trivia | The Scripture Lady

Illustration of Abraham and Lot with sheep and goats, depicting their story from Genesis 13.

The classic “Father Abraham” song has been a favorite of children for decades — what kid doesn’t love using up all their energy moving their arms, legs, head, and body to that tune?

The real lesson behind the song, though, is that Abraham became the father of many nations, just as God promised him in Genesis 18. Through Abraham’s family, God would show His love and redemption, which would one day come through His Son, Jesus. Spiritually, that means anyone who believes in Jesus becomes a child of God — one of the “many sons” the song sings about.

Abraham’s story is full of faith. One of my favorite examples is found in Genesis 13, when God used a growing conflict between Abraham and his nephew Lot to point Abraham toward his next step of trust.

“So Abram said to Lot, ‘Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren. Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left.’… Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other. Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent even as far as Sodom.” Genesis 13:8-9, 11-12 (NKJV)

If you know the rest of the story, Lot’s choice led him toward the doomed cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, while Abraham continued to follow and trust God.

This Bible story song will help your preschoolers learn about Abraham’s faith through the story of Abraham and Lot, and for this one you will need the following:

  • The “Father Abraham Had Many Sheep” video (below)
  • A coloring sheet of Abraham and Lot’s animals (linked below)
  • An activity sheet of Abraham and Lot vocabulary words (linked below)
  • A printable picture of Abraham and Lot parting ways (linked below)

I wanted to share this story during my program called “Animals in the Bible.” I thought it would be perfect, since the story is full of sheep, goats, and cattle! As I began writing the song, the classic “Father Abraham” tune came to mind, and I started singing: “Father Abraham had many sheep, many sheep had Father Abraham!” That was it — I knew I had to revamp this classic song to fit Abraham and Lot’s story.

Here is the video presentation of this fun song and story:

Here is the video that shares the moves to this song:

Coloring Sheet: Abraham and Lot’s Animals

Print one coloring sheet per child, then play this simple listening game: tell the children you’ll make the sound of a sheep (“Baaah”) or a cow (“Moo”) a certain number of times. If you “Moo” three times, they find and color the cow numbered 3. If you “Baaah” four times, they find and color the sheep numbered 4. Keep playing until every animal is colored!

Activity Sheet: Abraham and Lot Vocabulary Words

This second activity page gives key words from the story of Abraham and Lot for children to trace and match to the correct picture.

Picture: Abraham and Lot Parting Ways

A beautiful picture of Abraham and Lot making their decision to part ways — perfect for helping you tell the story.

Suggestions for Success:

  1. Play the song a few times before the activity sheets so kids already know the tune and can hum along while they work.
  2. Use the picture of Abraham and Lot to retell the story in your own words before diving into the activities.
  3. Pair this with the elementary trivia below if you’re teaching a mixed-age group — everyone gets to explore Abraham’s story together.

3 Creative Ways to Use These Trivia Questions:

  1. Bucket Toss Trivia — Label 3 buckets or bowls 12, 19, and 22. Kids take turns tossing a beanbag into a bucket; whichever number it lands in tells you which set of trivia questions to ask them.
  2. Freeze and Answer — Play the Father Abraham song and have kids move around like Abraham’s “many sheep.” When the music stops, call on whoever is closest to you to answer the next trivia question.
  3. Relay Race Trivia — Split the class into two teams lined up on one side of the room. Ask a trivia question; the first team to send a runner to tag the far wall and back earns the chance to answer for a point.

I love how one classic song led me to retell this whole story of Abraham and Lot! Abraham’s faith still challenges me today — he trusted God even when it meant giving up the better land. I hope this song and trivia challenge help your kids see that same trust.
