One of the most famous verses in the Bible is also one of the simplest to live out: the Golden Rule. Matthew 7:12 says it plainly — do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I love teaching this truth through creative music, storytelling, and puppetry, and my puppet friends Jack and Jill are the perfect pair to bring it to life.
Watch Jack and Jill perform the song:
In this skit, Jack and Jill are learning that their hearts need to be in the right place when it comes to the Golden Rule. Jack learns he needs to be kind and loving to Jill, even when she isn’t kind back — and Jill learns the very same lesson about Jack.
This Bible puppet song will help your kids learn and love Matthew 7:12, and for this one you will need the following:
- Your own puppets (any two will do!)
- The sing-along track below
Bring the song to your own puppets:
Want your kids to perform this song with their own puppets? You don’t need to be a puppeteer or a singer to make that happen. I’ve included two versions of the song:
🎵 Listen to “The Golden Rule Song” — with Kathy’s voice
🎵 Listen to “The Golden Rule Song” — instrumental, without vocals
Use the first track to learn the song and the puppet moves. Once you know it, switch to the instrumental version and have your own puppets “sing” the song in your own voice — a fun way to make this a hands-on performance for your kids or class, not just something they watch.
Teach the Golden Rule at home with Kindness Cards
After singing the song, I like to play a game that helps children practice the Golden Rule within their own families. Below are 5 printable posters showing simple ways kids can show kindness — each one featuring 4 duplicate cards of a kind act, plus a “Kindness Award” page to back them.
Print one act-of-kindness page per child, along with the Kindness Award page, and cut along the lines — you’ll end up with 4 duplicate cards, each backed by a piece of the award.
How to play:
Pick one kindness card each week for your child to work on — say, “Giving a hug.” When you catch them showing that kindness to someone in the family, have them display one of the four cards on the fridge or a bulletin board to show they’ve earned a piece of the Kindness Award. Once all 4 pieces are earned, celebrate with a special treat!
Printable Kindness Posters:
- Poster One: Give a Hug
- Poster Two: Give a Handshake
- Poster Three: Give a High-Five
- Poster Four: Blow a Kiss
- Poster Five: Say a Prayer
- Poster Six: The Kindness Award
Suggestions for Success:
- Let kids pick their own puppets (stuffed animals work in a pinch!) to perform the instrumental track with.
- Rotate which kindness card the family focuses on each week so all 5 acts get practiced over time.
- Keep a finished Kindness Award on display as a reminder of what the child accomplished.
“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12
