Scripture Lady’s Scripture Pictures: Bible Verse Rebuses for Kids

The Scripture Lady loves Bible verse rebuses! They are creative ways to teach Bible Verses! She calls them “Scripture Pictures”.

Remember the TV game show “Concentration”?  You know, it was the one where people had to guess the phrase that was pictured rebus style.  I loved that show!  But then again, I have always loved the challenge of figuring out puzzles.

I bet many of your kids would like the challenge of deciphering a rebus puzzle as well, but instead of having it be a meaningless phrase, why not give them a Scripture to solve.

Below, I’ve given you 3 different Bible verse rebuses or what I like to call “Scripture Pictures”.  You can download all three of them right here.

In addition, here are 3 different ways you and your children can have some fun with these Bible verses pictures for kids:

1.  Play “Concentration” – If you don’t know or don’t remember, the game show “Concentration” was played liked this:  There were two contestants who took turns answering various trivia questions.  If they answered correctly, then they earned the chance to pick one of the numbered squares that was covering up the rebus.  Eventually as more squares were picked to reveal more of the rebus it eventually became easier to guess the phrase the rebus was picturing.

You can adapt this game to your class by hanging up your Scripture Picture so that your entire class can easily see it.  Before hanging it up though, you should cover the picture with squares of Post-It notes and then label each square with a number. You can easily cover up an 8.5 x 11 paper with 12 regular size Post-Its.  There will be some overhang, but that’s OK.  The goal is for each square to reveal a part of the rebus when it is taken off.  By the way, you may want to double or triple up on the Post-Its so that the picture cannot be seen.

Finally, prepare some Bible trivia questions of your own.  Perhaps they can be centered around the verse or just simply be some review questions from the Bible story you just taught.  Divide your class into two teams.  If a child answers a question correctly, they may pick a number and you, the teacher, will take the Post-It off that was picked.  Give the child 30 seconds to make a guess at what the verse is.  You may or may not allow the team to work together in the effort of guessing.  The first team to successfully guess the Bible verse wins.

As a side note:  I have written the reference to each verse at the bottom of each Scripture Picture.  You may or may not want this revealed until after the verse has been guessed.  Just cover it up or cut it off if you choose to not reveal the reference.

2.  Friendly Competition – Divide your class into two teams.  Make two copies of the Scripture Picture you would like to give out.  Have each team sit together in a huddle.  Give each team the same Scripture Picture.  If a team thinks they have a correct guess, have them come up and whisper it into your ear.  If they are right, they have won the competition.  If they are wrong, quietly tell them to try again.

3.  Scripture Picture Mail – Kids love to get mail!  They would especially love to receive a Scripture Picture in the mail that they must figure out, then bring back to class for a special surprise.  So, why not take one of the Scripture Pictures and pop it into an envelope along with a little note saying that you are praying for the child and hope that they are having a great week.  Let them know if they solve the mystery of the Scripture Picture and bring it back to class, they will get a special prize or treat.

Happy solving!
