Hoops of Love: A Super Bible Memory Verse Activity for Elementary Kids

Has anyone ever encouraged you to love more and do greater deeds?  I believe Jesus did this throughout His entire life.  He modeled what it meant to love and do what was right and inspired His disciples to do the same.  Hebrews 10:24 says this:  “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”  Here is a fun Bible memory verse activity to help your kids learn this Scripture along with some verses about love.

Here’s what you do:

For this game you will need 3 hoola hoops.  You will also need 3 beanbags.  During the game, you will have 2 students each hold a hoola hoop.  Have the hoola hoops be about 6 feet apart and in a line.  A child will try and throw a beanbag through all 3 hoops, so they should be lined up as best as possible.  You will also need the questions on love found below.

Before playing the game, you might want to introduce the game in the following way:

Who would like to read Hebrews 10:24?  (Wait for response.)  There’s a funny word in this verse if we are reading from the NIV.  It’s the word “spur”.  This isn’t the kind of spur cowboys have on their boots.  This spur means to encourage.  For example, when you come to Sunday School, it is my goal to spur or encourage you to love God’s Word.  I also hope to spur you to love one another.  I also hope to spur you to love God.  Can anyone else think of ways we can spur one another to love or to do good deeds?  (Wait for responses.)  Good job!  Those are great ideas.  Now let’s play a game to help you learn Hebrews 10:24 and some other verses about love.

How to play:

Divide your class into 2 teams.  As said before, pick 6 children to hold the hoops – 2 on each hoop.  (If you have a small class, one per hoop should be fine also.)  Tell the hoop holders that they will get the chance to play the game as well.  Have one child from the first team come forward.  Ask him one of the questions on love found below.  If he answers correctly, he will now have the chance to throw a beanbag through all 3 hoola hoops.  For each one he successfully throws it through, he will earn 50 points.  So, one throw could possibly earn a team 150 points if it goes through all 3 hoops.  He will get to throw a total of 3 beanbags.  At the end of his throws, he can earn an extra 50 points if he can say Hebrews 10:24.  The team with the most points after all the questions have been asked is the winner.

A couple of suggestions:

  1. When it is a hoop holders turn to play for his team, just have another student take his place.
  2. Have the child stand about 6 feet from the first hoop.  You might want to mark it off with a piece of tape.

Questions on Love:  For each of these questions, you will first read the given Bible verse.  Each question contains 2 choices to answer the question correctly.  The student must give the correct choice.  I have underlined the correct answer in each.

  1. Mark 12:30-31 – This Bible verse points out that we should love God with all our (heart or liver)?
  2. Romans 14:10 – Love (does harm or does no harm) to a neighbor?
  3. Psalm 31:23 – For the Lord (disowns or preserves) the faithful.
  4. Proverbs 10:12 – Hatred stirs up strife, but (love or violence) covers all sins.
  5. Song of Solomon 8:7 – Many waters cannot quench (hatred or love).
  6. Matthew 5:44 – But I say to you, love your enemies, (bless or hate) those who curse you.
  7. John 13:35 – By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have (hatred or love) for one another.
  8. John 14:15 – If you love God, (forget or keep) His commandments.
  9. Romans 12:9 – Hate what is evil.  Cling to what is (good or bad).
  10. 1 Corinthians 13:13 – And now abide faith hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is (faith or love).
