“Power of Prayer” is an “explosive” lesson on how God sometimes answers our prayers in very powerful ways.
“Power of Prayer” uses the very engaging chemical reaction commonly referred to as “Elephant’s Toothpaste.” The kids love this effect. When you put it with a great lesson on prayer, you have a winning combination.

What you will need:
You will need some kind of large container about the size of a large turkey pan. I actually use a plastic tub and its sides are about 3“³ high.
You will need an empty one liter water bottle. Take off the label.
You will need a small juice glass.
You will need one packet of Active Dry Yeast that you will pour into the juice glass. (Do not use the fast acting kind.)
You will need enough hot water to dissolve the yeast in, no more than a 1/4 cup.
You will need approximately 2 cups of 40 Volume Clear Hydrogen Peroxide; also known as stabilizer formula (This is what people bleach their hair with). I purchase mine at my local beauty store. The brand name I use is Salon Care. Be aware, you cannot use “normal” hydrogen peroxide from the drug store. It is not powerful enough to give a great effect.
You will need a few drops of green food coloring to get a nice green color. You will add this to the peroxide.
You will need a glass caraffe or some kind of attractive glass bottle that will hold the peroxide.
You will need about a tablespoon of liquid dish soap.
You will need a funnel.
You will need something to stir the yeast with. I like to use wooden chopsticks.
You will need the following label for your bottle. Click on the following link:
YOU – Attach this label to your empty water bottle. Make sure it really sticks even if it gets wet.
You are now ready to perform this Bible object lesson for “Power of Prayer.”Have fun!
Script/Patter by Kathy Vincent
There are many different kinds of prayers you can pray.
And each time you pray and trust in God’s goodness to answer all your prayers according to His good will and purpose, then you will grow in your love for God and in His power to do what He asks you to do.
Let me show you what I mean.
I have here an empty bottle. I want this empty bottle to remind you of you. (Show bottle with the “YOU” label.)
You are a person who prays to God.
You are a person who trusts in God to answer all your prayers according to His good will and purpose.
I also have a pretty bottle here filled with green liquid. (Show the bottle with the green liquid.) The color of green reminds us of things that grow. Green trees grow, green grass grows and green plants grow.
In every prayer you pray, you can grow in your relationship with God.
(After each of the following prayers, pour about a third of the green liquid into the “YOU” bottle using the funnel.)
For example, let’s say you are going to pray for someone in your family who is sick. Then you wait and you watch to see how God is going to answer.
Or maybe you have a friend whom you pray for who is struggling with their homework. Then you wait and you watch to see how God is going to answer.
Or maybe you are praying that God will have your mom and dad spend some more time with you. Then you wait and you watch to see how God is going to answer.
So far you have definitely grown in your relationship with God with each of those prayers you prayed. (Lift up the “YOU” bottle to show the liquid inside.)
Remember earlier when I said that sometimes you can grow in the power of God so that you can carry out what God asks you to do?
I mean, quite frankly, this doesn’t look very powerful. Things look kind of quiet and still.
But what if a really difficult situation comes into your life?
Take for example, Daniel. Daniel was going to be thrown to the lions’ den! That’s a true story in the Bible.
I bet Daniel “beefed” up his prayers to God asking that he not become beef for the lions.
There might be situations in your life that you have to pray a whole lot more for, too.
Inside this glass here, I have some yeast. (Show the glass with yeast.) Yeast is added to some dough to help the dough rise quickly. Yeast is pretty powerful.
Let’s let this yeast remind us of our increased prayers in a difficult situation.
I also have some water here.
In Ephesians 5:26, the Bible says that the Word of God is like water and when we add water into our lives, then God uses that water to cleanse us and make us more like Him. (Add water to the yeast.)
I’m going to mix up this yeast and the water. (Stir the water and yeast.) Remember, this is like mixing the Word of God with our increased prayers in a difficult situation.
I wonder what will happen when we add these increased prayers into the prayers that you’ve already prayed?
Let’s see what happens. (Add water and yeast to bottle.)
Whoa! Will you look at that! God’s power is alive and well! And you can trust God to answer all your prayers according to His good will and purpose.
And you never know, His answers might just blow you away!
