Have you ever handed a preschooler a flashlight and just… watched what happens? The giggles, the wiggling beams of light dancing across the ceiling, the pure delight on their little faces — it is one of those simple joys that never gets old!
I love finding ways to use everyday objects to bring God’s Word to life for little ones, and this activity does exactly that. It’s called Happy Lights, and it uses flashlights to help preschoolers fall in love with Psalm 119:105.
“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105
What a beautiful verse for young children to begin hiding in their hearts! It teaches them that the Bible is their guide — that when they follow God’s Word, they will know which way to go. And what better way to illustrate that truth than with a room full of shining, happy little flashlights?
WHAT YOU NEED + HOW TO PLAY
What you need:
Cut a circle of construction paper to fit over the end of each flashlight. On each circle, cut out a simple happy face — two eyes, a nose, and a big smile. Tape one to the end of every flashlight. That’s it! Your Happy Lights are ready.
Before Class:
Write each clue on a separate index card. Keep each set of clues in a labeled envelope — but make sure the character’s name faces inward so kids can’t peek! Set up your pocket chart so you can display one clue at a time.
How to Play:
Gather your preschoolers together and introduce the verse like this:
“Boys and girls, raise your hands if you ever get scared of the dark! (Wait for response.) I get scared of the dark too — I like being in the light much better! I think God likes the light better too. Here’s a Bible verse that tells us how God’s Word, the Bible, is like a light and a lamp. Listen to what it says: ‘Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.’ Now let’s say it together. I’ll say some words first and then you repeat after me.” (Say a couple of words at a time and let the children echo back.)
“Can anybody point to some lights in our room? (Wait for response.) Good job! Lights are important — they help us see where to go and keep us from bumping into things so we don’t get hurt. God’s Word, the Bible, is like a light too. It shows us where to go and keeps us safe when we do what God tells us to do. God’s Word should make us very happy — just like this happy light I am holding!” (Hold up your happy face flashlight.)
“When we love God and obey Him, we will be happy! Here is a flashlight for each of you to hold.” (Hand out the flashlights and explain how to turn them on and off.)
“Now I am going to turn the lights off in our room — but before I do, everyone turn your flashlights on!” (Turn off the room lights.) “Wow! Would you look at how bright our room is? It’s beautiful! Now shine your lights up on the wall. Do you see the happy faces? They’re all over!”
“Now we are going to play a little game. I am going to say an object in our room — for example, I might say ‘the clock’ — and I want everyone to shine their lights on that object. Then we will say our Bible verse together!”
Call out objects around the room one at a time, and after each one, say Psalm 119:105 together. Keep the pace lively and your little ones will be saying that verse before they even realize they’re memorizing it!
