A normal day lasts 24 hours, but did you know there’s a story in the Bible where one day lasted almost 48 hours? It’s true, and the story is known as “The Day the Sun Stood Still.” It’s found in Joshua 10:1–15 and takes place during a battle Joshua was a part of. Let’s learn the true story of “The Day the Sun Stood Still” while playing the game “Monday Through Friday.”
This Bible story game will help your kids learn the true story of Joshua 10, and for this one you will need the following:
- A tall, thin vase or tube for each team
- A bowl of sponge balls (or any small balls) in 5 colors for each team (see color key below — confirm/finalize with your own color choices)
- A picture reference card at each table showing the correct color order
- A whiteboard or chalkboard for a scorekeeper to track points

How to play “Monday Through Friday”:
Divide your class into teams, each with its own table, tall thin vase, and bowl of colored balls. Before playing, choose a scorekeeper to come up to the board. Tell the Bible story of Joshua 10 in 6 parts (see below), and after each part, invite 2 children per team to come forward and play a round of the game.
On the word “GO,” each team places their balls into their vase in the correct color order, matching the reference card at their table. The first team to get all their days of the week in the correct order wins 1,000 points for their team.

The Story of “The Day the Sun Stood Still” — Told in 6 Parts:

Part 1: Many people know the story of how Joshua fought the battle of Jericho, and how the walls of the city came tumbling down because Joshua was faithful and obeyed God. But there’s another story — a time when Joshua didn’t ask for God’s guidance first, about a peace treaty with a town called Gibeon.
Part 2: God had told the Israelites not to make a peace treaty with any nearby town. But Gibeon wanted Joshua’s protection, so they tricked him — pretending to be travelers from far away by wearing old, worn-out clothes they claimed had been new when they left home.
Part 3: Joshua didn’t ask God what to do. Instead, he made a peace treaty with Gibeon — and later found out he’d been tricked! Joshua knew he’d made a big mistake by trying to handle things on his own. Still, he had given his word, so he had to honor the treaty with Gibeon.
Part 4: Soon, war broke out against Gibeon, and they came to Joshua asking for his protection. Joshua took his best fighting men and marched all night to help them. As they marched, God told Joshua not to be afraid — He had already given Joshua the victory.
Part 5: God’s word proved true! Joshua was able to surprise the enemies of Gibeon — God made them confused, and as Joshua’s army pursued them, God even sent huge hailstones from the sky that defeated their enemies!
Part 6: But the story wasn’t over yet. Joshua prayed and asked God to make the sun stand still until they had complete victory. And God did it! The Bible says the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and didn’t go down for almost a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since, because the Lord listened to what a man asked and fought for Israel.
Suggestions for Success:
- Practice the color-order relay once before telling the story, so kids understand how to play before the pressure of a real round.
- Keep the game moving quickly between story parts to hold everyone’s attention.
- Consider a small prize or recognition for the winning team at the end of all 6 rounds.
