This past Monday, here in America, we observed a special day called Labor Day. Did you know the Bible is full of special days too? One extremely special day was when the sun stood still to make the day longer, so that Joshua could win a great victory over his enemies.
I love introducing preschoolers to this amazing true story using one of my favorite storytelling formats — “Flip and Find.” Kids get to flip over a picture at each part of the story to reveal a large surprise picture underneath, all while hearing the story told through a simple, rhyming poem.

The video below shows you how to prepare and present a “Flip and Find” game — it’s from a different story (“The Lord’s Prayer”), but it will walk you through exactly how to set up and play the format for today’s story, “The Day the Sun Stood Still.”

This Bible story game will help your preschoolers experience “The Day the Sun Stood Still,” and for this one you will need the following:
- The downloadable “Flip and Find” PDF below (front story pictures + surprise picture portions)
- A pocket chart (optional, but recommended — see the instructional video above)
- Card stock and laminate, if you’d like these pieces to last

How to play:
Display your story pictures on a pocket chart, front side out, in the correct order of the story. As you read each of the 6 parts of the poem below, invite a child to come forward, find the matching picture, and flip it over to reveal the surprise picture underneath.
The Poem: “The Day the Sun Stood Still” (Joshua 10:1–15)
1. There was a man named Joshua
Who loved God very much
Because Joshua obeyed God, the walls of Jericho
Came tumbling down through God’s powerful touch
When Joshua faced a new problem
With a people called the Gibeonites
Joshua did not ask God for His help
This was not good. This was not right.
2. The Gibeonites tricked Joshua
Into believing they were a nation from far away
They cried out, “Please help us fight our enemies!”
“Please help us, we pray!”
3. Joshua promised the Gibeonites
That he would help them with their fight
But this is not what God wanted
Therefore Joshua’s promise was not right
Joshua now knew that he was wrong
Not to trust and rely on God
But Joshua had to honor his promise
Even though the people of Gibeon were a fraud
4. Soon war broke out against the Gibeonites
They came asking for Joshua’s aide
Joshua took his best fighting men and as they marched to Gibeon
God told Joshua, “Do not be afraid!”
God told Joshua, “I have given
These enemies into your hand!”
“Not one of them will win against you!”
“Not one of them will stand!”
5. Joshua surprised the enemies of Gibeon
God’s word proved to be true
God made the enemies of Gibeon
Confused through and through
Then God sent hailstones
Down from the sky
To crush their enemies
Oh, how they must have cried
6. But our story isn’t done
Something else amazing took place
Joshua prayed and asked God
To make the sun stand still
This would be a miracle by God’s great grace
The sun did stand still
Every enemy was defeated by God’s plan
There has never been a day like it since
When the Lord stopped the sun
After listening to a man

Suggestions for Success:
- Attach the front and back pictures correctly using the instructional video as your guide before your first time playing.
- Read the poem through once on its own so kids can hear the whole story before playing the game.
- Laminate the pieces so you can reuse this story again and again.
