Making Marvelous Music with Your Preschoolers:A Scripture Lady Workshop
Thank you so much for attending my workshop, “Making Marvelous Music with Your Preschoolers.” I truly hope that the ideas that areshared will bless you and the children you minister to.
I LOVE to sing! I’ve been singing all my life and I am very blessed to have been able to write and produce several Bible song CD’s for the preschool through elementary ages. Since the Lord has opened up my ministry to include working with both children and adults with special needs, I have been learning how to share my music in even more effective ways to proclaim God’s wonderful love for all His children.
Ministering to preschoolersis such a blessing and being able to share my music with them is just an added bonus. Over the years I have learned 4 areas that are crucial to the success of a fun and respectful time of worship. They include the need for toe-tapping tunes, memorable moves, eye-catching props (when appropriate) and repetition.
Toe-Tapping Tunes
If my toe’s not tapping, then my students aren’t clapping! I grew up listening to all sorts of music. My mom loved music and so there was always an album playing on the turntable. (You remember those, don’t you?) She enjoyed everything from Sinatra to Earth, Wind and Fire. My dad loves country music and my favorite is Black Gospel. When I am writing a song, I want it to be lively and meaningful. Most of my music is Bible verse songs and includes all different genres. Preschoolerslove a good beat and I love knowing that they are learning God’s Word. Music seems to be a universal way to communicate and since our world is filled with so much great music, you really have no excuse not to include it in your time of ministry with your little ones. Even those students who may not appear to be connecting with the song you’ve chosen, are most likely enjoying the sounds and the beats. Singing and dancing to fun songs is often the highlight or our Bible lesson.
Memorable Moves
If my students are singing a song, then they are probably dancing. Therefore, including memorable moves to all the songs you choose for your Bible lessons is really quite essential. Moving to music can create an atmosphere of joy and praise that is essential to worshiping God. I encourage you to make the moves simple, however. Don’t be a perfectionist and expect your students to get all of the moves correct. Adding moves is more about providing an outlet of expression in worship to God and in community with their peers.
Eye-Catching Props
If you know me, you know that I love props. My garage is full of them! Using eye-catching props with your music can be a fun addition to your time of worship. I don’t use props with all my songs, but I pull some out when I believe the song warrants it. For example, I have some cool “Blues Brothers” type hats that I bring out for a couple of jazzy type songs my students enjoy. It’ makes them feel like they’re acting and getting a chance to be “cool.” A lot of times, I will bring out my cowboy hats for my country western type songs. They enjoy this as well. You don’t want the props to be a distraction to your worship time, but an addition. Pray for wisdom to know when and where to bring them out.
Repetition
Finally, preschoolerslove singing the same songs over and over! While this may make your vocal chords a little loopy, remember that repetition is a common way for little onesto learn. As they repeat the verses and moves over and over again, they have the potential of growing in their confidence and in their understanding of the truth or truths the song is teaching.
Worshiping with your preschoolers will be a joy when you take them time to incorporate these four areas. Remember to be prepared and to do your best in all you do for these precious people!
