Why You MUST Teach Your Kids About Jesus by The Scripture Lady

Here are 3 reasons why you MUST teach your kids about Jesus. There are some in today’s culture who believe children must make their own “religious” choices when they are older. This is not only dangerous, but unbiblical. Let’s learn 3 refutable reasons for the necessity of teaching your children about God.

I am passionate about why you MUST teach your kids about Jesus when they are young. You see, I have the privilege of sharing my musical Bible programs to hundreds of children every month. Some of the kids come from Christian homes and some do not. As my ministry has spilled over past the 2 decades mark, I see children whose parents are not taking their God-given responsibility to raise their children in the fear and knowledge of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I see children who feel lost and afraid and I see parents who are struggling to make meaning of their lives for themselves and their families.

Is there an answer to the many questions that families have today? Yes! The answer is Jesus. And you and your family can begin bringing Jesus into the center of your home  today. And I encourage you to start with your children.

Here are 3 reasons why you MUST teach your kids about Jesus:

1. God commands it.

One of my absolute favorite Bible verses is Deuteronomy 11:18-19 which says:

Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. (NIV)

This verse specifically says that you must teach your children the Word of God, which is the Bible. The Bible is very clear that the training of your children should be your top priority as a parent. Yes, your children need to learn how to read and write and learn all the other academics that they can learn, BUT if you are not training them in the ways of the Lord, all that knowledge won’t mean a thing when they stand before the Lord one day.

This world is ever-changing. But the word of God stands forever. (Psalm 119:89) The truth of God and His Son, Jesus, and God, the Holy Spirit, can be your children’s anchor in your home and outside of the home where they are daily confronted with choices to either honor God or not.

But if your children are not taught about Jesus, then they will flounder. They will be thrown about like a wave upon the sea.

As parents, you make sure your children get the food they need each and every day. That food strengthens and sustains their physical bodies. But God has not just created us as physical beings. God has placed within each one of us a spirit that is eternal, which brings us to the next reason why you must teach your kids about Jesus.

2. We are spiritual beings that must be fed.

First, let me quickly establish that God has given each of us a spiritual body and not just a physical body.

First, God Himself is a Spirit:

John 4:24 says this: “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

Second, God made each of us in His own image:

Genesis 1:26 says this: “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…”

Therefore, we are spiritual beings.

Job 32:8 says this: “But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.”

Just as our physical bodies need food to live, our spiritual bodies need to be nourished by the truths of God found in the Bible.

I like what John Bloom says in his article titled You Become What You Eat:

“Man does not live by bread alone, but . . . by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord” (Deuteronomy 8:3; Matthew 4:4). Our souls are designed to be nourished by God’s “precious and very great promises” (2 Peter 1:4).

But these promises are not mere human words; they are living and active (Hebrews 4:12), proceeding directly from the living Word, Jesus Christ (John 1:1). He is the Word of God (Revelation 19:13) and “all the promises of God find their Yes in him” (2 Corinthians 1:20).

Your children must also receive their spiritual food every day. Taking time to teach them about God and His Son, Jesus, will be the best “meal” that you can give them each and every day. If you neglect this God-given command and privilege, you will have children who will take roads and make decisions based on their own knowledge and standards rather than on the absolute truths of Jesus, which brings us to our third reason of why you must teach your kids about Jesus.

3. Weeds of doubt will take over where you should have diligently sowed seeds of faith

I am not a gardener. In fact, I would say I have a “black thumb.” But it doesn’t take a gardener to know that weeds will quickly overtake a plot of land that is not carefully tended.

Each of our lives is like a garden. Whether we are young or old, every choice we make is like a seed being sown in the garden of our lives. Good seeds produce good fruit. Bad seeds produce bad fruit.

Your children need to be taught about Jesus when they are young. If you are a Christian, then you will be obedient to the call of God on your life and train your children in the ways of the Lord. If you do not take responsibility for the spiritual upbringing of your kids, then the world will.

The “weeds” of lies are everywhere and they are ready to spring up in the gardens of your children. As a Christian, protect your children from these lies and tend their gardens carefully with the truths of God’s love and goodness and righteousness every day.
