Another word for timidity is fear. We live in a world where there is a lot to be afraid of, but as Christians, the Bible tells us that we don’t have to live in fear because we have Jesus Christ living inside of us. And because our Lord and Savior lives inside of us we have access to His power, His love and self-discipline. These are 3 characteristics that can empower us to say, “No!” to being afraid.
Having God’s power helps us remember that we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength. (Philippians 4:13) We can rely on His strength and power in our lives. Even when we are weak, He is strong! (2 Corinthians 12:9-11)
Having God’s love can definitely help us when fearful thoughts come along. If we really know that God loves us then we will trust in Him to always do what is best for us. Even when fearful situations come into our lives, we can hold on tight to the truth that He loves us and will see us through and even work for the good in difficult situations. (Romans 8:28)
Having God’s self-discipline can also be a big help in times of fear. When we walk with the Lord in a disciplined manner, we will find that the “drama” of life and many of its fears will dissipate. For example, when you are disciplined in daily reading the Bible, you are positioning yourself to hear from God and His guidance for your life. Another great discipline to have as a Christian is going to church. Worshiping God with others is a great way to strengthen your relationship with God and those around you. You will be strengthened to walk forward confidently with Jesus rather than in fear.
