I love teaching kids that prayer is how we communicate with God and that He hears everything we say to Him.  Play this game to encourage your kids to grow in prayer and friendship with God.

What you need: For this Bible game you will need to prepare the following cards:

The first set of cards are the “20 Reasons to Pray” cards. Label with the following phrases and I encourage you to also include a nice picture that goes along with each topic:

Pray for our church

Pray to get along with people

Tell God you love Him

Pray for those in authority

Pray for your friends

Pray for more people to do God’s work

Pray for missionaries

Pray for guidance

Pray for your school

Pray to understand the Bible

Tell God when you are sad

Pray for your country

Pray for your family

Tell God when you are happy

Pray for forgiveness

Tell God you are thankful

Pray for things you need

Pray for the sick

Pray when you’re in danger

Pray for people to accept Jesus

The next set of cards will be the “Pick” cards. You will need to make the following:

4 cards that say “Pick 4 Reasons to Pray”

2 cards that say “Pick 2 Reasons to Pray”

2 cards that say “Put 2 Reasons Back”

2 cards that say “Put 1 Reasons Back”

1 card that says “Pick 1 Reason from the Other Team”

Finally, laminate all the cards so that they will last for a long time.

Set Up:  For this game, I use a pocket chart (approx. 28″ square). (You can find pocket charts at your local teacher supply store or online at www.orientaltrading.com)  I have mounted my chart to a board to give it stability and then placed it on an easel.  Place all “20 Reasons to Pray” cards onto the pocket chart in any order with picture side showing out.  You do not need a scorekeeper for this game, but you will need another pocket chart or some type of display board upon which you can place the cards that were picked by each team.  You will also need to place the “Pick” cards in a bucket or hat out of which the children can pick.

How to Play:  Divide your children into 2 teams.  Decide who will go first.  Give a child a Bible review question on prayer or on another topic.  If he gets it correct, he now gets the chance to pick one card out of the bucket and follow its directions.  If the card says to “pick four” or “two cards”, then the child picks that number of “Reasons to Pray” cards and then displays them on the other board for his team.  But if he picks a “put back one” or “two” cards and the child’s team doesn’t have any cards, then his turn is simply over.  Now it’s the next team’s turn.  Have them follow the same procedure until you have asked all your Bible review questions.  The team with the most cards wins.

Suggestion:  As the “Game Sow Host” you should repeat each of the “Reasons to Pray” as they are picked from the chart or given back to the chart.  You also might want to require that after each “Reason to Pray” card is picked, the child should give a quick example of a prayer for that card.  For example, if they pick the card that says “We can pray for people in authority” they might say, “We can pray for our President.”
